Men's Basketball Resumes Conference Play Against American International College

The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team will resume Northeast 10 Conference play against American International College as part of a two-game road trip starting on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.
 
The Owls presently sit in fourth place in the Southwest Division of the NE10 with a record of 7-6, but are tied in the loss column with third place New Haven, who has a record of 8-6. Adelphi sits in second place with a record of 9-5, while Southern has a half-game lead over Pace for fifth place at 7-7. The Owls are also four games ahead of sixth place American International with six games currently remaining. The top five teams in each division play in the conference tournament, with the top three teams in each division automatically earning a spot in the quarterfinals and the top two teams hosting a quarterfinals game.

All-Time Against American International: 31-51
The Last Time They Met: Southern will play American International for the second this season, as they previously played at James Moore Field House on Nov. 26. The Yellow Jackets won that game, 82-76. Three Owls scored in double figures, led by C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.), who had team-high 19 points and went 5-10 from three-point range. Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) also scored 19 points and shot 8-12 from the field. Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Southern has won five consecutive games against American International in Springfield, Mass., dating back to the 2014-15 season. 
 
Last Time Out
  • Southern defeated to New York Institute of Technology, 95-61, at James Moore Field House. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, their final non-conference game of the season.
  • The Owls had four players score in double figures, as Jones led the offense with a game-high 27 points and four made three-pointers.
  • Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) scored 22 points and went 9-16 from the field, while Khalil Richard (Baltimore, Md.) added 15 points and went a perfect 6-7 from the field.
  • Bennett scored 11 points, went 5-for-10 from the field and recorded five steals. 

Player Notes
  • Jones scored at least 25 points for the third time this season, all of which have came in the last five games.
  • Jones is averaging 16.5 points per game and shooting 54.9 percent from the field over his last 11 games, dating back to Dec. 10 against Saint Rose.
  • Jones has made 26 of his last 28 free throw attempts dating back to Jan. 8 against Adelphi.
  • Adams II has scored in double-figures in 15 of his 17 games played.
  • Adams II is averaging 17.8 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game since Dec. 4 against New Haven, a span of 12 games, while also recording six double-doubles in those 12 games and shooting 57.5 percent from the field.
  • Since the start of January, Adams II is 11-20 (55 percent) from three-point range.
  • Over his last 10 games, Richard is averaging 13.2 points per game, shooting 48.5 percent from the field, and 39.5 percent from three-point range. 
  • Bennett's five steals against New York Tech were a career-high, and the most by a Southern player since Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) had five against Le Moyne on Feb. 20, 2016. 
  • Bennett became the first Southern freshman with at least five steals in a game since Trevor Harris recorded five against Assumption on Jan. 20, 2007.
  • Bennett is shooting 42.9 percent from three-point range since Nov. 26, a span of 14 games.
  • Seaforth has scored at least 15 points in nine of his 16 games played this season.  
  • Over the last three games, Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) is 16-31 from the field and 6-14 from three-point range, scoring a total of 38 points. 
  • Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) is the only player to have appeared in every game for Southern this season, and is shooting 47.3 percent from the field and pulling down 5.5 rebounds per game since Jan. 22. 
  • Jones was named to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll for the 12th week of the season for his performances against Assumption College and Saint Anselm.
 
Team Notes Against New York Tech
  • The Owls shot a season best 58.2 percent from the field and 65.0 percent from beyond the arc, their fourth three-point percentage in a game in program history.
  • Southern had two 20-point scorers (Jones and Adams) in a game for the third time this season.
  • Southern recorded a season-high 26 assists and had a season-low eight turnovers, good for a 3.25 A/TO.
  • The Owls' defense had a season-high 12 steals and forced a season-high 22 turnovers.
  • The Owls 34-point margin of victory was their largest of the season, and the second time this season they have won by at least 30 points and third time they have won by at least 25 points.
  • Southern finished the non-conference schedule with a 5-2 record, their most wins since winning five during 2014-15 season and have won nine consecutive non-conference home games, dating back to the 2016-17 season.

  • Jones and Adams II are the only pair of teammates in the NE10 to average at least 13 points and seven rebounds per game.
