SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to American International College, 76-57, on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2021 at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium in Springfield, Mass. With the loss, the Owls drop to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NE10.
Aaron Russell (Bowie, Md.) led the Owls with a game-high 13 points, while
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 12 points and
Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored 11.
Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) shot 3-for-6 from the field and scored six points to go along with five rebounds and two blocked shots.
How It Happened
First Half
- Both offenses started the game well, with AIC holding an 8-7 lead after the first four minutes and four seconds. AIC then went on a 19-10 run to take a 27-17 lead with 7:46 remaining and forced a Southern timeout.
- AIC extended their lead to 37-19 with 3:35 remaining.
- Russell made a corner three-pointer to restart the Owls' offense, but the Yellow Jackets took a 42-25 lead into halftime. Bennett shot 3-for-5 in the first 20 minutes to pace Southern with nine points.
Second Half
- AIC kept up their hot start coming out of the locker room, and scored 12 of the first 14 points of the half to take a 54-27 lead. Coleman made a pair of free throws, but the Yellow Jackets scored seven straight points to take a 61-33 lead.
- AIC took their largest lead of the game at 72-40 with 5:31 remaining. Southern outscored AIC 17-4 in the final five minutes of the game by shooting 6-of-9 from the field. Russell scored five of Southern's points, and Alex Lin (Hillsdale, N.J.), Evan Gutowski (Trumbull, Conn.), and Elmin Redzepagic (Wolcott, Conn.) all scored two points each.
