Lacrosse Comes Back To Defeat Saint Rose, 10-9, In First Matchup Between Two Programs

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team came back to defeat The College of Saint Rose, 10-9, in the first ever matchup between the two programs on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, N.Y.. With the win, the Owls improve to 2-2 overall and in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights fall to 1-8 overall and in the NE10.
 
Southern scored the final four goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to complete their comeback, capped off by a goal by Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.) with 1:13 remaining in the game. Steph Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) tied her career-high with four goals scored and added two assists, while Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) scored two goals, including the game-tying goal with 4:50 remaining. Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.), Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.), and Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) also added goals for the Owls, while Jagodzinski and Jettke Gray (Easton, Conn.) also recorded assists. Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) recorded nine saves.

First Half
  • The Golden Knights controlled much of the first half, scoring the first goal of the game with 24:43 remaining and not trailing until there was 3:37 left in the half. Kelly was able to tie the game at one with 19:50 remaining.
  • Saint Rose scored with 11:34 remaining to retake the lead, but Southern answered quickly on a goal from Gordon at the 8:51 mark to tie the game at two.
  • Saint Rose took their third lead of the half with 6:14 left, but Seymour scored three consecutive goals, the first coming off an assist from Jagodzinski, to tie the game and eventually take a 5-3 lead into the break.


Second Half
  • Saint Rose came out on fire to begin the second half, scoring six of the first seven goals after the intermission to take a 9-6 lead with 17:53 remaining, their largest lead of the game.
  • Seymour scored her fourth goal of the game with 25:59 remaining before the Golden Knights rattled off four consecutive goals.
  • Rowe ignited the Owls' comeback, scoring with 9:51 remaining off an assist from Seymour. Seymour dished out another assist, this time to Jagodzinski, with 7:14 remaining to trim the Saint Rose lead to 9-8.
  • Gordon scored her second goal of the game to tie the game at 9-9 with 4:50 remaining. Pulisciano then finished off the Owls' comeback by scoring off a feed from Gray with 1:13 remaining, and Southern held on for a 10-9 win.  
 

Notes
  • Seymour recorded her ninth career multi-goal game and fourth career game with four goals scored. It was her first since time scoring four goals in game since Feb. 29, 2020 against Post.
  • Seymour's six points and four goals were the most by a Southern player this season, and the most since Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) had nine points and five assists on Feb. 29, 2020 against Post.
  • Gordon has now scored a goal in 12 consecutive games, the longest streak by a Southern player since Samantha Cozzolino scored a goal in 23 straight games from April 26, 2017-March 12, 2019.  
  • Rowe has recorded a point in all 26 games of her collegiate career, and is tied with Seymour with a team-high seven goals this season.
  • Caroline White (Madison, Conn.) caused a career-high four turnovers, and a season-high for a Southern player this year. 
  • Jagodzinski tied a career-high with three ground balls scooped up, last done on April 6, 2019 against Bentley.  
  • Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) tied her career-high with three caused turnovers, last done on Feb. 26, 2020 against Bridgeport. 
  • With her seven saves today, Morton now had 430 career saves.
  • Southern caused a season-high 19 turnovers, their most since causing 24 turnovers on March 31, 2012 against Saint Michael's.
  • Southern's comeback from down three goals to win is their largest comeback win since March 24, 2019, when they also came back from three goals down to defeat Saint Michael's, 13-12, in overtime.
