NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team lost to American International, 19-9, on Senior Day in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, the Owls drop to 2-4 overall and in conference play while AIC improves to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in the NE10.
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) led Southern with a career-high tying four goals and one assist for a five-point afternoon, while Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) had a career-high four assists. Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) scored twice and recorded four draw controls and Steph Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) added two assists, three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) had five caused turnovers for the Owls.
First Half
- AIC took an early lead, and never looked back, as Krista Iwanicki scored twice in the opening minutes and then assisted on a goal by Anevay Rice to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead.
- Both teams would trade goals over the next 10 minutes of play, starting with Takacs' fifth goal of the season off a pass from Gordon to get the Owls on the board.
- Rice scored again for AIC before Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) scored to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead in half, 4-2.
- After AIC pushed its lead to 5-2, Southern scored back-to-back goals from Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.) and Jettke Gray (Easton, Conn.), followed by a goal by AIC, then a marker by Jagozinski to make the score 6-5.
- AIC responded with back-to-back goals before Takacs scored with 42-seconds remaining in the half to send the Owls to the break trailing by two, 8-6.
Second Half
- Takacs scored again less than seven minutes into the second half to cut AIC's lead to 8-7. AIC then dominated much of the time remaining as they scored nine unanswered goals to take a 17-7 lead with 11 minutes to play.
- With nine minutes remaining, it was Takacs again off a pass from Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.) to pull the Owls within nine, 17-8, followed by Jagodzinski's second goal of the game to make it 17-9 with just under four minutes to play.
- AIC's Kaitlyn Morris added a pair of goals in the closing minutes to bring the Yellow Jackets' final lead to 19-9.
Notes
- Morgan Chase's five caused turnovers were a career-high, passing the previous mark of three against St. Rose on April 19. She leads the team with 14 for the year. It was also the most by a Southern player in a game this season.
- Chase has caused at least two turnovers in all five games she has played in this season. Chase is the first Southern player with multiple caused turnovers in five consecutive games since Brianna Grande did so from April 2-April 24, 2019.
- Chase's streak of multiple caused turnovers in five consecutive games to start the season is the longest by a Southern player since at least 2008.
- Hailey Gordon's four assists were also a career-best, as she previously had two assists, three times in her career. For the year, she is one of three players, along with Takacs and Seymour, to tally seven assists for the season, while also adding eight goals for 15 points.
- Gordon's four assists were also the most by a Southern player in a game this season.
- Takacs' four goals against the Yellow Jackets were a season-high and her third career four-goal game. Takacs has scored eight goals this season to go-along with seven assists for 15 points.
- Takacs has recorded a point in 12 consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season.
- Seymour leads the team in points (16) on the strength of nine goals and seven assists.
- All four goals by Gray this season have come against AIC, as she found the net three times against the Yellow Jackets on March 31.
- Molly Kelly's goal was also her fourth of the season.
- Laura Morton had 12 saves today, brining her career total to 448.
