Women's Lacrosse Battles No. 20 New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse battled against nationally-ranked No. 20 University of New Haven at Jess Dow Field, with the Chargers coming out on top, 13-10, after a hard-fought matchup by both teams. Southern drops to 2-5 overall and in Northeast 10 Conference play while New Haven improves to 6-6 overall and 6-5 in the NE10.

The final score was not indicative of the game played by the Owls, who led the contest with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. The Owls and Chargers were tied, 10-10, with under six minutes to play before New Haven took control of the lead in the closing minutes. Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) led the Owls' with four goals, while Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) had two goals and two assists.Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.) had a goal and an assist to go with a team-best four ground balls. Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) led all players with a game-high nine draw controls, while Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) caused a game-high four turnovers.

In goal, Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) recorded 10 saves in the contest, with seven coming in the first half to help the Owls to a 5-3 lead at halftime.

First Half
  • Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead inside the first three minutes of play when Gordon set-up Rowe with the first goal of the game, followed by a marker from Seymour to give the Owls the two-goal lead.  
  • After New Haven tied the game at two, Southern responded with a three-straight goals from Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.), Gordon and Rowe, for her second point of the day, this one on a pass from Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.). UNH tacked on another goal inside the final minute of the first half to send the game into the break with the Owls leading, 5-3.
Second Half
  • Coming out of the break, three Chargers' goals in the half's first three minutes gave UNH its first lead of the day, 6-5.
  • Rowe scored her third goal of the game to tie it up before UNH got the goal back to retake the lead, 7-6.
  • Gordon then scored to tie the game before Pulisciano was credited with a goal that was appeared to be knocked into the Chargers' goal by a UNH defender.
  • With the Owls' leading 8-7, UNH's Emily Holland scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Chargers a 9-8 lead. Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.) scored to tie the game at 9-9 before UNH scored again. Rowe tied the game on a free position goal with 11:30 to play to make it 10-10.
  • From there, UNH scored three-straight goals to end the scoring on the night and give the visitors a three-goal win, 13-10.
Notes
  • Rowe is the fourth Southern player to score four goals in a game this season. She now leads the team with 12 goals for the year. Her four goals against New Haven are a season-best. She entered Monday's game with two goals in her last three games before breaking-out against the No. 20 Chargers.
  • Gordon now has six goals and seven assists in her last three games. For the year, she has 10 goals and nine assists for a team-leading 19 points.
  • With her two goals today, Gordon scored her 50th, and 51st, goals of her career, doing so in 40 games. She joins Rowe (55) as the only two active Owls with 50 career goals. 
  • Seymour scored her 10th goal of the season, tied with Gordon for the second-most on the Owls' roster.
  • Seymour also recorded her 20th career assist, becoming the seventh player in program history with at least 20 career assists. 
  • With an assist in the game, Takacs now has a point in 13 consecutive games dating back to last season. She has eight goals and eight assists for the season.
  • Chase now has at least four caused turnovers in back-to-back games with nine total in that span. She leads the Owls with 18 caused turnovers for the season.  
  • Chase is the first Southern player with at least four caused turnovers in two consecutive games since Carolynn Keal did so from March 25-29, 2017. 
  • Chase is also the first Southern player with multiple caused turnovers in six consecutive games since at least 2008. 
  • Jagodzinski's nine draw controls are her second-most this season. She has 24 over her last three games and a team-best 38 for the year.
  • Pulisciano scooped up a career-high four ground balls. 
  • Southern allowed just 13 goals to New Haven, their fewest against a nationally-ranked opponent since allowing 10 against No. 10 Stonehill on April 7, 2016. 
  • Southern's 10 goals against the Chargers were the most since Mar. 16, 2017 when the Owls scored 11 against New Haven.
  • UNH's 13 goals were the fewest scored against the Owls in the programs' all-time history.
  • Laura Morton had 10 saves today, brining her career total to 458.
