SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey dropped a heartbreaker at American International College, 2-1 in overtime, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Springfield, Mass. The loss drops the Owls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in NE10 play.
Alyssa Haskins (Enfield, Conn.) scored her second career goal to tie the game just under two minutes into the fourth quarter with
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) picking up her first career point on the Owls only goal in the contest. In goal,
Janelle Ward (Kitchener, Ontario) stopped seven of the Yellow Jackets' nine shots-on-goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- AIC scored 16 minutes into the game when Na'Bree Wallace scored off a pass from Avery Sevigny.
- The Yellow Jackets threated to take a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later before Ward turned back a flurry of shots to keep the Owls in the game.
- In the third, it was Ward again on display as she denied AIC of another scoring opportunity – denying Nicole Mercadante as well as the rebound attempt by Nadia Elcock.
- Less than two minutes into the third period, Haskins broke through with the Owls' lone marker in the game to tie it at 1-1.
- The Owls defense swarmed the Yellow Jackets, denying a shot-on-goal in the final quarter. Kiley Jackson had an opportunity to win it in the closing seconds but her bid was stopped by AIC goalie Jessica Stone.
- The back-and-forth battled continued in overtime, as both teams saw opportunities stopped by stellar goal play. In the end, Mercadante snuck one through to give AIC the win at home.
NOTES
- Janelle Ward currently leads the NE10 with 62 saves against 76 shots-on-goal. Her .816 save percentage ranks fourth in the conference.
- Haskins only other career goal came in a 3-2 overtime loss to AIC in 2018.
- Haskins in the fourth SCSU player to score a goal this season. She currently leads the team with three points, on the strength of one goal and one assist.
