WORCESTER, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Assumption, 90-70, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Laska Gymnasium. With the loss, the Owls fall to 4-9 overall and 2-6 in the NE10, while the Greyhounds improve to 8-6 overall and 4-6 in the NE10.

Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Maine) led all players with 23 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting, 4-of-6 from three-point range, and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 11 points, while C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) and Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) both scored 10 points each.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Assumption began the game with a 16-11 lead through the first seven minutes of play. The Greyhounds then scored eight straight points to take a 13-point lead.
  • Southern brought the lead down to eight after Bagshaw knocked down a three-pointer and Leo Chaikin (South Hero, Vt.) made a layup on back-to-back possessions. After a three-pointer by Assumption, Penn immediately made a layup and Seaforth made a three-pointer to cut the lead to 32-26 with 7:52 remaining.
  • After Assumption scored five straight points, Bagshaw went on a 6-0 run of his own to cut the lead to five with 5:22 remaining.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets throughout the remaining minutes of the first half, but Assumption began to pull away late and took a 50-37 lead into the locker room.
  • Bagshaw shot 3-for-4 in the first half with nine points.
Second Half
  • Assumption extended their lead to 58-43 to begin the second half. Penn, Bennett, and Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) all scored on consecutive possessions to bring the lead down to nine, and, after a made three-pointer by the Greyhounds, were able to cut the lead to seven after another basket by Penn and a layup by Bagshaw with 10:33 remaining.
  • Assumption went on a 13-0 run to take a 73-53 lead with 7:02 remaining. Bagshaw made two free throws to halt the run, but Assumption upped their lead upped to 23.
  • Bagshaw continued his strong play into the final minutes, as he scored 10 points in the final six minutes.
Notes
  • Bagshaw's 23 points, six made field goals, and four made three-pointers were all a new career-high. He previously entered today's game with 10 points, three field goals, and two three-pointers for the season.
  • Bagshaw's 23 points scored are also the most by a Southern freshman since Coleman scored 29 against New Haven on Jan. 31, 2018. He also scored the most points by a Southern player coming off the bench since Seaforth scored 25 against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 10, 2019.
  • This marks the second consecutive game a Southern player recorded a new career-high in points scored with 23, as Bennett reached the total against Stonehill on Saturday, Jan. 22. The 23 points scored by Bennett against Stonehill and Bagshaw against Assumption are the most by a Southern player this season.
  • Penn has reached the double-digit point threshold in three of his last four games.
