SCSU Football Celebrates Homecoming With 37-20 Win Against Franklin Pierce

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In front of a capacity crowd of over 5,000 on campus for Southern Connecticut's Homecoming 2022 celebration, the Owls' football team defeated Franklin Pierce, 37-20, for its first win of the 2022 season.

Tylon Papallo (Meriden, Conn.) had a pair of highlight-reel plays with an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown before also scoring on a 49-yard reception. Owls quarterback Marc Reali (Biddeford, Me.) was 6-for-11 for 141 yards and a 49-yard touchdown pass and totaled 60 yards on the ground with a 17-yard touchdown run. The Owls ran the ball 42 times against the Ravens, with Jordan Davis (Wallingford, Conn.) rushing for a team-high 65 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown and a 43-yard carry. Ryan Soules (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) led Southern with three catches for 37 yards. Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, and also converted on all four extra-point attempts.

Defensively, Robert Nunez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a game-high 10 tackles including a pair of quarterback hurries. Hasan Dominick (Jersey City, N.J.) had eight tackles and a sack while also breaking up a pass. Harrison Smith (Rochester, Mass.) also had a sack and two hurries while Joe DiGello (Orange, Conn.) finished with two sacks for the day, and also forced a fumble. Richard Williams, Jr. (Wethersfield, Conn.) had an interception for the Owls.

Reali put the Owls on the board with a 17-yard touchdown run that capped an eight-play, 72-yard game-opening drive. On the ensuing drive, Papallo made it 14-0 with an 82-yard return on a punt for a touchdown. Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) converted on a 17-yard field goal to give Southern a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Papallo scored again on the 49-yard pass from Reali to give the Owls a 24-0 cushion. Franklin Pierce scored, but the Owls blocked the extra-point attempt, to send the game to halftime with Southern leading, 24-6.

Coming out of the half, Gawlick booted his second field goal of the afternoon to give the Owls a 27-6 lead. Franklin Pierce answered with a touchdown, followed by a missed extra-point attempt, to make it 27-12. Gawlick booted another field goal, this one from 37 yards, to push Southern's lead to 18 points, 30-12.

Less than a minute later, Franklin Pierce showed some life again when Bryce Mancina connected with Christian Simon for a 16-yard touchdown, with a two-point conversion, to pull within 10 points, 30-20.

Southern closed the game with a seven-play, 78-yard drive, highlighted by Davis' 43-yard run, that ended with a one-yard touchdown for the Owls' running back.
Southern returns to action when it travels to Bentley on Saturday, Oct. 22.
