Men's Soccer Stuns New Haven, 5-3, with Hat Trick from Hilpert

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's soccer defeated University of New Haven in the Elm-City rivalry game, 5-3, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in West Haven, Conn. The Owls rise to 5-3-3 overall, and 2-2-2 in the NE10. The Chargers drop to 0-7-4 after the match, and become 0-4-3 in the NE10. The last time the Owls had a five-goal game on the Chargers was 14 years ago on Sept. 7, 2008.

Yannick Hilpert (Den Haag, Zuid Holland, Netherlands) had a day with a hat trick, the first since Markus Jacobsen on Nov. 4, 2014 against Franklin Pierce and the Owls' first on the road since Michael Semedo tabbed three goals at Stonehill on Sept. 21, 2005 in Easton, Mass. Leroy Best (Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) also scored for the second-straight game and added two assists. The Owls also benefited from an Own goal by the Chargers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first goal came just into the 12th minute off of assists from Karim Said (Erlangen, Germany) and Leroy Best. Just 16 minutes later, Hilpert converted once again off a ball played in by Best. It was 2-0 at the end of the first half, with the Owls leading the way.

The Chargers upped their threat in the second half by scoring in the 53rd minute by Adam Lindstrom to make the game 2-1, but the Owls responded with another goal by Hilpert just six minutes later.

The Chargers responded once again with another goal by Lindstrom in the 66th minute of play. Owls' Best unleashed a ball in the 74th minute which was saved by Charger goalkeeper, Ryan Lunn, but rebounded off the goalkeeper's leg to become an own goal in the Owls' favor.

Just one minute later, New Haven responded with a goal by Sean Lane-Turnbull, to lessen the edge of the Owls, 4-3. The deal was finally sealed for the Owls when Best converted in the 82nd minute off an assist from Said.
