SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Bridgeport, 90-75

Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Southern Connecticut lost to Bridgeport, 90-75, in the Owls' second game of the Bridgeport Tipoff Classic and Conference Crossover tournament.
 
Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored a team-high 22 points while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had 18 points and five rebounds. Cherif Diarra (Bronx, N.Y.) had eight points and eight rebounds, as well as three assists.
 
The game opened with Southern Connecticut controlling play in the opening minutes to take a 13-7 lead. Bridgeport managed to come back and tie the game, 17-17, with 11:29 to play before the Owls used a 6-0 run to push its lead back up to six points, 23-16, with Cherif Diarra putting up four points. The half continued to go back-and-forth before Bridgeport tied it again at 28-28.
 
Kazell Stewart's fastbreak dunk with 3:25 gave Southern a 36-32 lead, but it proved to be the Owls' last field goal before halftime, while Bridgeport outscored the Owls, 9-2, over the remaining time to take a 41-38 lead into the break. Silvera's nine points paced the Owls in the first half, while Diarra had eight points and four rebounds. Logan Bagshaw hit both three-point attempts in the first 20 while Kazell Stewart had six points and three rebounds.
 
Coming out of the half, Southern tied the game when Silvera converted 10-seconds into the half before Jahlijah Grant knocked-down a three-pointer to even the score at 43-43. Ulyen Coleman then converted on a lay-up and free throw after being fouled as the Owls regained the lead. Coleman scored seven points in the first two minutes of the half as Southern took the lead, but both teams continued to play back-and-forth, with the Owls tying the game at 55-55 with 13:53 to play.
 
Bridgeport held off a SCSU charge to take off on a 14-4 run that saw the home court Purple Knights take a 69-59 lead. Bridgeport was able to keep Southern at arm's length before Coleman converted on back-to-back possessions to pull the Owls within five point, 78-73. Ultimately, Bridgeport closed out the final five minutes on a 12-2 run to take the win.
 
Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when it hosts Caldwell for its home opener at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
