Ulyen Coleman Scores 1,000th Career Point In 72-69 Win Against Caldwell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) became Southern Connecticut men's basketball's newest member of the 1,000 Point Club while leading the Owls to a 72-69 non-conference win against Caldwell at James Moore Field House. The win is the Owls' first of the season as they improve to 1-2 on the year.

Coleman finished with 13 points and five rebounds, but it was Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) with a team-high 20 points with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) Had his best game of the young season with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) continued to flash his all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Coleman became the 32nd SCSU student-athlete to reach 1,000 points and the first since C.J. Seaforth last season. Coleman's 1,011 points comes across 76 career games and moved him past John Lavery who totaled 1,009 from 1972 through 1976. The 2017-18 Northeast 10 Rookie of the Year, Coleman has scored at a 13.3 per-game clip for his career and leads the Owls at 15.7 per game this season.

The game opened with both teams trading baskets, including Coleman's 999th and 1,000th point at the 16:22 mark, before Caldwell's Kirk Parsons gave the Cougars a 13-11 lead with 12:13 to play. Southern then orchestrated a 14-0 run, capped by a Greg Williams three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Cherif Diarra, that gave them a 25-13 lead with 7:40 to play. Caldwell countered with an 18-8 run that tied the game at 31-31 with two minutes to play before the break. After a put-back by Stewart and a hoop-and-free throw by Coleman, the Owls headed to the locker room with a three-point lead, 36-33.

Southern never relinquished the lead for the second half, though Caldwell made it interesting. Southern outscored Caldwell, 16-10, over the second half's first 10 minutes, with Silvera accounting for six of the Owls points while Coleman chipped in four. Down the stretch, Caldwell outscored Southern, 26-20, while Stewart's seven points proved to be the difference, with Sean James providing a six-point support in the final nine minutes. James also had four assists in the game.

Southern is back in action with its Northeast 10 Conference opener on Saturday, Nov. 16 when it hosts Southern New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
