Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SCSU Men's Basketball Clipped By SNHU, 58-57

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Southern New Hampshire, 58-57, in the Owls' Northeast 10 Conference opener at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the NE10 while Southern New Hampshire improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) and Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) both scored 12 points, each, off the bench, with James hitting on 4-for-5 from the floor including 3-of-4 from three-point range and finishing with three steals. Stewart also collected five rebound and had two blocks and two steals. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) totaled 10 points, six steals and five rebounds as well as three assists.

SNHU used an 8-2 run to open the game over the first five minutes of play. A tough defensive matchup from end-to-end, neither team was giving up much as both teams accounted for a combined two field goals over the next three minutes of play. The Owls used a pair of three-pointers from Stewart and James to move within a basket, but SNHU countered and pushed it's lead to five, 13-8, halfway through the first half.

After Southern's Zach Penn (New Hartford, Conn.), Jahlijah Grant (Mississauga, Ontario) and Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored on three-straight possessions to move the Owls within a basket, 19-17, it was Coleman with a three-pointer that tied the game at 20-20 with four minutes to play before halftime. Southern then used a 9-5 run, powered by a pair of baskets by Stewart and a three-pointer by James, to take a 29-25 lead, but a pair of free throws cut the Owls' halftime lead to 29-27.

Coming out of the half, the same physical play continued as SNHU's Derrick Grant's layup two minutes into the half tied it at 29-29. Silvera gave the Owls the lead and Grant knocked down a three to give the Owls a 34-29 lead. Both teams traded baskets before Southern used a nine-point run to take a 45-38 lead with 11 minutes to play.

Southern New Hampshire eventually took a 52-49 lead with six minutes on the clock and held off the Owls for the remaining time. With the Owls trailing by a basket, SNHU's Matt Becht iced the game with a pair of free throws with three seconds on the clock to give the Penmen a 58-54 with Coleman's buzzer beating three-pointer proving to leave the Owls' short by a point.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when it travels to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to take on Molloy at 5 p.m. The Owls return home to host Pace on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
