SCSU Men's Basketball Defeats Molloy, 83-60

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Molloy, 83-60, in a non-conference matchup in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the win, the Owls improve to 2-3 overall while Molloy drops to 0-6. The win was also the 100th of Owls' head coach Scott Burrell's career.

Owls grad student Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) had a team-leading 16 points as well as nine rebounds while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor. Penn led four Owls in double figures as Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) had 15 points, four assists and three steals, while Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) had 13 points. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) finished with 11 points and nine boards to go along with three blocks in the win. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had six points and a team-leading 10 rebounds with two blocks. The Owls' 23-point win was Southern's largest margin of victory since the Owls defeated NYIT, 95-62, on Feb. 5, 2020.

Southern opened the game with a 15-5 run in which Coleman knocked down three-of-four attempts from three-point range for nine points in the run. Penn meanwhile totaled four points while he combined with Diarra on the low post to stifle the Molloy offense to the tune of 1-for-6 to open the game. Molloy answered with a 9-0 run of its own to pull within a point of the Owls, 15-14, with 12:31 to go in the half.

The Owls defense once-again answered the call, forcing five turnovers, with Coleman recording two steals, over the next several minutes while five different Owls scored in a 12-2 run to take a 27-16 lead with seven minutes to play. Down the stretch, both teams played even as Molloy keyed off of 10 points from Darren Fergus, aided by 9-of-12 shooting by the team from the free throw line, to outscore Southern, 17-16, heading into the half. The Owls led 43-33 heading to the break, led by Coleman's 12 first-half points, while all 10 players scored for Southern in the first frame. The team combined to shoot 17-for-38, including 6-of-12 from three-point range.

Molloy opened the second half with a 7-0 mini-run as Southern missed its first four shots of the half. It served as a wake-up call for the Owls who went on a 13-0 run in which they converted on 5-of-7 from the floor as Penn and Stewart combined for 11 points to give Southern a 56-40 lead. Southern pushed it's lead to 21 points, 75-54, after outscoring after outscoring Molloy, 19-17, over a 10 minute stretch. Southern would run down the clock in the closing minutes to hold-on for the 23-point victory.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 when it hosts Pace for a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House at 7:30 p.m.
