SCSU Men's Basketball Comes From Behind To Top Pace, 59-52

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A wild second half saw Southern Connecticut knock off Pace, 59-52, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The win, the Owls' first in NE10 play, puts them at 1-1 in the conference and 3-3 overall while Pace drops to 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the NE10.

Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Owls with 14 points off the bench on the strength of 4-for-6 shooting from three-point range, include three from long range over the final 10 minutes of the game. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) had 13 points, including a thunderous baseline dunk that gave the Owls the lead and sent the Owls' faithful at Moore Field House into a frenzy. Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) also had 13 points while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) totaled 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Owls opened the game with a 9-2 run, powered by five points from Silvera and four from Coleman. A pair of three-pointers from Brandon Powell pushed Pace on a run and gave them a 12-11 lead halfway through the first frame. Pace pushed it's lead to 17-12, on the strength of a 15-3 run, and cruised into halftime with a 24-20 lead. Despite shooting 7-for-22 from the field and 3-for-8 from the free throw line, the Owls were in the game thanks to Coleman's seven points and Silvera's six.

The second half started with Pace using an 9-4 run over the first five minutes of the final frame to take a nine-point lead, 33-24. A three-pointer by Powell with 13:01 to play gave the Setters their largest lead of the game, 40-28.

Back-to-back buckets by Stewart and a consecutive threes from James cut Pace lead to 42-38 with 10 minutes to play. From there, the Owls dominated, outscoring Pace, 9-5, to tie the game at 47-47, capped off by a three-pointer by James with five minutes to play. After a Brandon Powell missed three-pointer, Stewart drove baseline and flushed the two-handed exclamation point over the Pace defense to give Southern a 49-47 lead, which it would not relinquish over the remainder of the game. Stewart added another five points down the stretch.



Southern is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when it travels to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup set for 3:30 p.m.
