SCSU Football Rolls To 44-7 Win Against Post

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football won the first matchup, all-time, against Post University, 44-7, at Jess Dow Field. The win was the Owls third in their last four games as they improved to 3-7 on the year.

Five different Owls scored in the win, with Anthony Ligi (Wolcott, Conn.) leading the Owls' backfield with 111 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Shawn Martin (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Jordan Davis (Wallingford, Conn.) also had touchdown carries while Tylon Papallo (Meriden, Conn.) and Tim O'Shea (Southington, Conn.) accounted for Southern's two receiving scores. Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) converted on 3-of-5 field goal attempts and was 5-for-5 on PAT's.

Andreas Picarelli (Yonkers, N.Y.) unofficially kicked the longest punt in program history with an 84-yard boot in the third quarter. Owls quarterback Marc Reali (Biddeford, Me.) was 11-for-24 for 154 yards passing and collected 60 yards on seven carries. Joe Bernard (Nashua, N.H.) passed for 71 yards on 7-for-12 passing.

The Southern defense harassed Post quarterback Broghean McGovern for most of the day as the Owls combined for two sacks, five hurries and six tackles for a loss. Dominick Hasan (Jersey City, N.J.) and Robert Nunez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led Southern with eight tackles each while Nunez recorded a sack and broke up a pass. Joe DiGello (Orange, Conn.) had his second interception of the season and Bryce Garvey recovered two fumbles for the Owls. Elijah Alexandre (Stratford, Conn.) broke up three passes and Jean Desir (Bridgeport, Conn.) also recorded an interception.

The Owls got on the board early when Gawlick converted on a pair of field goals in the first quarter to give Southern a 6-0 lead. Joe Bernard then hooked up with Tim O'Shea on a 19-yard touchdown pass that pushed Southern's lead to 13-0. Just before the end of the half, Shawn Martin scored from a yard out to give Southern a 20-0 lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of the half, it as Gawlick against from 19 yards that made it 23-0 in favor of the Owls before Post finally broke through with its first points of the game. McGovern hooked up with Taji Blizzard on a 74-yard touchdown pass to cut Southern's lead to 23-7.

The Owls responded with three third quarter touchdowns, with Davis scoring on a six-yard run that capped a 17-play, 77-yard drive before Papallo scored on a 20-yard pass from Marc Reali. Ligi then punched one in from nine yards after the Owls drove down the field with a six-play, 85-yard drive.
