SCSU Men’s Basketball Beats Bloomfield, 78-71

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Southern Connecticut notched a win against Bloomfield College, 78-71, in a non-conference matchup in Bloomfield, N.J. With the win, the Owls improve to 8-3 on the season and Bloomfield drops to 5-5 overall. Southern is now on a four-game winning streak.

Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) posted a team-best and personal-best 21 points, going 7-of-13 from the floor, and 2-of-4 from three point range. He finished with 5-of-6 from the free throw line and grabbed seven rebounds while assisting on six. Silvera scored 17 of his points during the first half to keep the Owls within the tight scoreline. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) popped off with 16 points, all scored within the second half to boost the Owls to victory. Penn went 7-of-8 from the field and recorded one three-pointer from his singular attempt. He also made three rebounds and had three assists. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) and Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) each recorded a team-best nine rebounds, with Stewart finishing with 14 points and Coleman with 11 points. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) finished with eight points and three rebounds in the Owls' win. Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) assisted on three baskets, while adding up four points.

The game unraveled with Bloomfield taking a slight lead over the Owls. With 9:22 left in the first half, the Owls succumbed to an 11 point disadvantage, 23-12. Within the next minute and a half, the Owls went on a streak to score six points to minimize the gap to 23-18. The Owls continued to battle back, ultimately taking a 36-33 lead at the closure of the half. Marty Silvera led the team in points, scoring 17 within the first half. Silvera went 6-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-3 in three point range, and shot 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He scored nine points within the last five minutes of the half to help give Southern a boost before the buzzer. Cherif Diarra notched eight points during first 20 minutes, grabbing two rebounds and going 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Kazell Stewart recorded six points and three rebounds.

The second half brought another 20 minutes of high intensity basketball and an increasingly close scoreline. With 14:22 left in the second half, Bloomfield tied up the score, 45-45 off a pair of free throws by Tyrek Battle-Holley. The Owls took the lead once again off a driving layup by Sean James. Another successful conversion of free throws by Tyrek Battle-Holley tied up the game once again, but Jahlijah Grant's (Mississauga, Ontario) conversion of one free throw put the Owls on top. This back-and-forth action occurred for the next three minutes, ultimately seeing Ulyen Coleman score a major 3-pointer to tie up the game with 10:38 remaining, 51-51. Zack Penn converted on a jumper and then Coleman scored a roaring dunk to silence Bloomfield. The Owls then went on a run to score 14 unanswered points that began with 5:12 left in the half to increase the Owls' lead, 73-59. Highlights include dunks from both Zack Penn and Kazell Stewart during this span. Bloomfield's reentry onto the scoreboard started with 1:36 left in the game where they narrowed the score to 74-69. A pair of free throws by Marty Silvera with 6.3 seconds left finally gave the Owls a cushion to finish the game, 78-71.

After a break for the holidays, the Owls will return to face Mercy College at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2022 at James Moore Field House.
