SCSU Men's Basketball Tops Adelphi, 82-56, As Four Owls Reach Double Digits

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball used a balanced attack and its best shooting night of the season in a 82-56 rout of Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. With the win, Southern improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 while Adelphi drops to 3-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Marty Silvera led four Owls in double figures with 16 points after hitting on 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Ulyen Coleman totaled 14 points and six rebounds while Jahlijah Grant had a break-out game with 12 points in 24 minutes. Sean James had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists while Cherif Diarra had a team, season-best 14 rebounds to go along with eight points, three assists and three steals.

Southern opened the game with a 12-3 run over the game's first five minutes. Marty Silvera led the Owls' charge out of the gates with back-to-back three-pointers for Southern's first points of the game. Southern then blitzed the Panthers by outscoring Adelphi, 28-11, over the next 10 minutes. The Owls' largest lead of the game came with 4:25 to play in the first half when a jumper by James gave Southern a 23-point lead, 37-14.

By the end of the half, four different players – Silvera, Sean James, Ulyen Coleman and Jahlijah Grant – all had at least eight points, with James leading the way with 11, as Southern took a 46-24 lead into the half. The Owls were aided by potent shooting as they hit on 50% (17-34) from the field including 6-for-8 from three-point range.

In the second half, Adelphi attacked, outscoring the Owls 10-1 over the half's first four minutes. Southern bounced back when a three-pointer by Ulyen Coleman at the 10:43 mark that capped a 12-3 run by the Owls and gave Southern a 23-point lead with the final 10 minutes of the game to play. Overall, from the 16-minute mark, until there was just under seven minutes to go, Southern drained 11-of-16 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and outscored the Panthers, 27-12, to lead by 30, 76-46, with 6:07 to play.

The Owls dominated play for most of the game. Southern outrebounded Adelphi, 45-29, including 17 on the offensive end, with Diarra claiming eight off the Owls' glass, for 17 second-chance points. Southern also converted 19 Adelphi turnovers, on 10 Owls' steals, to 28 points. It was also the most points the Owls scored this season since their 83-point effort against Molloy on Nov. 22. 

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when it hosts Saint Rose for a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
