Mattei Sets Program Record As Men's Track And Field Competes At David Hemery Valentine Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - Jake Mattei (Bethany, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's track and field team set the SCSU indoor 5000-meter program record with a time of 14:23.02 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022.. The previous record was held by Chris Chisholm in 1984 at 14:24.1.  

Terrell Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.) also starred for Southern, as he recorded the second fastest mile time in program history at 4:04.47, the second fastest among Division II athletes and 41st out of 275 competing athletes in the event. Josh Perry (Naugatuck, Conn.) currently holds the Owls' record at 4:03.50, set on Feb 24, 2012 at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships. 

Track Events
  • Naji Middleton (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished with a time of 7.34 in the 60-meter dash invite. 
  • In the open 60-meter dash, Joshua Lanzieri (Seymour, Conn.) finished in 15th place out of 68 with a time of 7.22, and Tariq Phillips (Waterbury, Conn.) finished with a time of 7.24 and 19th place. Naszier Torrence-Robinson (New Haven, Conn.) finished with a time of 7.29, and Rocco Samoker (Derby, Conn.) recorded a time of 7.54. 
  • Ramsley Exantus (Stratford, Conn.) finished in 15th place in the 60-meter hurdles invite with a time of 8.46, while Hunter Dale (Storrs, Conn.) recorded a time of 8.63. 
  • Jared Russo (Hamden, Conn.) finished in seventh place in the open 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.84.
  • In the 200-meter dash, Samoker recorded a time of 23.09, while Russo recorded a time of 23.98. 
  • Nigel Green (Shirley, N.Y.) finished in 13th place out of 196 in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.24, while Christ N'Dabian (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished in 16th place with a personal-best time of 48.47. 
  • In the 800-meter run, Marquis Whyte (New London, Conn.) finished with a personal-best time of 1:56.07, Quentin Askew (Middletown, Conn.) finished with a personal-best time of 1:57.22, Shea Kenney (Groton, Conn.) finished with a time of 1:59.47, and Knappe finished with a personal-best time of 2:01.08. 
  • Along with Patterson in the mile run, Jonathan Volpe (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded a time of 4:12.91 and Owen Gagne (Wethersfield, Conn.) recorded a time of 4:19.01. 
  • In the seeded 3000-meter run, Chris LeBeau (Bristol, Conn.) recorded a time of 8:22.20. 
  • In the unseeded 3000-meter run, Sophonias Dires (West Hartford, Conn.) finished with a personal-best time of 8:43.99, while Luca Cazzaniga (Bethel, Conn.) finished with a personal-best time of 8:45.41. 
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Exantus, Dale, N'Dabian, and Green finished in third place with a time of 3:13.03, the fastest time for Southern this season. 
Field Events
  • Spisek finished in third place, and first among Division II student-athletes, in the pole vault with a mark of 4.70 meters.

Southern will compete in the Northeast 10 Conference Championships on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.
