Men's Basketball Falters Late Against New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was defeated by University of New Haven, 70-56, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022. The Owls fall to 7-15 overall and 4-11 in the NE10, while the Chargers improve to 16-7 overall and 12-6 in the NE10. 

Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) had another strong performance for the Owls, as he scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) and Leo Chaikin (South Hero, Vt.) both provided a spark off the bench, with Boissard scoring nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and Chaikin with six points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. 

How It Happened
First Half
  • Both teams struggled offensively coming out of the gate, but New Haven held a 14-10 lead with 11:43 remaining. 
  • Coleman and Southern's offense caught fire in the latter part of the first half. Coleman scored nine of the Owls' next 13 points as Southern outscored the Chargers by nine over a five-minute stretch to take a 23-18 lead. Southern hit on six of their eight shots after making just five of their first 17. 
  • New Haven tied the game at 25 with 4:42 remaining of the half. Southern then went on an 11-6 spurt to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room. Coleman continued his strong start with seven points, while Chaikin added four. Southern went 5-for-8 from the field, while Coleman went 3-for-3 from the field on his own.
  • Overall, Southern shot 12-for-21 in the final 11:27 of the half, with Coleman scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He went 8-for-13 from the field in total in the first half with 18 points and pulled down six rebounds. 



Second Half
  • Both teams exchanged baskets during the first three minutes of the second half, with C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) scoring four of Southern's first six points. 
  • New Haven then outscored Southern 33-13 to end the game. Chaikin had an acrobatic fall-away jumper drop in at the 10:06 mark, while Boissard scored five points and made both of his shot attempts in the final three minutes of the game. 




Notes
  • Coleman equaled his season-high and a Southern season-high for points in a game with 23, his second consecutive 23-point game.
  • This is the fifth time a Southern player has scored 23 points in a game this season, as Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) did so against Stonehill on Jan. 22, Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Maine) did so against Assumption on Jan. 25, and Seaforth did so against Pace on Jan. 27.
  • This was Coleman's fourth 20-point game this season and 13th of his career.
  • Coleman also recorded his second consecutive double-double and fourth of his career, and his third this season. 
  • Coleman's 13 rebounds were one off his career-high. He had 14 on Jan, 19, 2019 at Stonehill. His 10 field goals made were also one off his career-high. He had 11 on Jan. 31, 2018 at Franklin Pierce.
  • In five career games against New Haven, Coleman is shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 48.4 percent from three-point range, and averaging 17.8 points per game.
  • Boissard is 7-for-10 from the field over the last two games. 
  • Chaikin has shot at least 50 percent from the field in 11 of the 14 game in which he has attemtped a field goal. 
  • Coleman now has 945 points for his career.
  • Seaforth now has 994 points for his career.
