NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to Saint Anselm, 74-60, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022. The Owls fall to 7-17 overall and 4-14 in the NE10, while the Hawks improve to 15-8 overall and 11-7 in the NE10.
Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, and
C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) also added 10 points.
Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds, and
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored nine points.
Aaron Russell (Bowie, Md.) came off the bench and recorded six points and three steals.
How It Happened
First Half
- After five lead changes in the first four minutes, Southern went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead at the 12:55 mark. Seaforth scored five of Southern's first 14 points while Boissard capped off the run with a three-pointer.
- Saint Anselm retook the lead at 17-16, and both teams exchanged baskets with five more lead changes until then Hawks lead 25-24 with 4:34 remaining. Leo Chaikin (South Hero, Vt.) came up with a huge block at the 8:12 mark.
- Six straight points by Saint Anselm gave them a 31-24 lead with just over two minutes remaining, their largest of the half. Bennett ended the Owls' drought with a layup in the final minute to cut into the lead heading into the locker room.
- Boissard scored six points during the half, while Seaforth and Jamaal Waters (Hartford, Conn.) both scored five. Waters also added two blocks.
Second Half
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Boissard and Seaforth cut the Hawks' lead down to two at the start of the half. Saint Anselm then was able to expand their lead to double digits, and took a 47-35 advantage with 12 minutes remaining.
- Bennett made a three-pointer and a layup, and found Elmin Redzepagic (Wolcott, Conn.) underneath for a layup to give Southern seven straight points and cut the lead down to five.
- With 9:38 left in the game, Saint Anselm went on an 18-8 run to take a 71-54 lead. Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Maine) scored the last six points of the game for Southern, highlighted by a two layups and two made free throws.
Notes
- Russell tied his career-high in steals with three, last done on Nov. 13, 2021 vs Post.
- Southern forced 20 turnovers on Saint Anselm, their fifth game this season where they forced 20 turnovers and the second time this season they forced 20 turnovers in back-to-back games. They also did so to begin the season against Post and Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14.
- Seaforth has now scored 1,014 points in his career and 968 while at Southern.
- Coleman has scored 960 points for his career.
