SCSU Baseball Tops Bloomfield, 14-12

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball opened its 2022 Spring Trip with a 14-11 win against Bloomfield at Santaluces Sports Complex in Lake Worth, Fla. The Owls improve to 9-0 on the season while Bloomfield drops to 4-8 on the year.

Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) made his return to the Owls' lineup after being sidelined since Feb. 25 to post a 3-for-4 day with three stolen bases, two RBI and two runs scored. Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two triples and three RBI while Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.) improved to 4-0 on the year after last six innings against Bloomfield, allowing five earned runs.

Southern got on the board in its first at-bat with DeMartino giving the Owls a 2-0 lead with a two-out triple that scored Bill Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Goggin. Sullivan drew three walks in the game and scored twice. The Owls then pushed across four runs in the second, on just one hit, but took advantage of five walks and two hit batters to manufacture a 7-4 lead after Bloomfield scored four times in the top of the inning.

After Bloomfield tied the game, 7-7 in the fourth, DeMartino led-off the inning with his second triple of the day and scored to give the Owls the lead, 8-7, on a sac-fly by Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.). Goggin connected for his first career home run – a three-run shot as a result of a pair of walks – to give the Owls a 11-7 lead.

Bloomfield got back on the board in the sixth to make it 11-8 before Zambito drove in pinch runners Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) and Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) with a double after Mike Ferrett walked to lead off the inning and Dave Christoforo (North Haven, Conn.) worked a single. Zambito scored on a sac fly by Sullivan to give the Owls a 14-8 lead.
Bloomfield responded with a three-run seventh inning to cut the Owls' lead in half to three runs, 14-11. After the Owls went in order in the bottom half of the inning, Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) entered the game in the top of the eighth. In the ninth, with one out, Hughes gave up a home run for the first run and hit allowed in 11 1/3 innings pitched.

NOTES
  • Zambito now has 10 stolen bases in four games played this season and 68 for his career, good for fourth all-time in program history. Two more stolen bases would make him the fourth Owl to steal 70 stolen bases in a career and leave him 10 stolen bases behind Nick Lamberti for the program record of 80.
  • DeMartino became the fourth player in program history to reach 10 career triples in his career, joining Michael Cleary (21), Mike Diaz (17), Karl Derbacher (13) and Marc Potocsky (11).
  • Goggin's fourth-inning, three-run homer was his first career longball. For the year, Goggin is hitting .333 (11-33) with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored.
