LAKE WORTH, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University split a doubleheader with No. 25 ranked Molloy losing 15-6 before winning 6-5, on Sunday, March 13 in Lake Worth, Fla. Southern is now 10-1 overall on the year, while Molloy is now 10-4.
Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 3-for-8 in the two games with four RBI, two runs, and a home run.
David Christoforo (North Haven, Conn.) hit a home run and went 2-for-4 with two walks, while
Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) drove in two runs and had a double.
Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) drew two walks and scored three runs between the two games and
Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) went 2-for-6 with three RBI. Southern's pitching staff struck out 19 Molloy hitters in two games.
Game 1: SCSU 6, Molloy 15
Southern suffered their first loss of the season despite home runs from Eng and Christofo and three RBI from Drewry. Goggin gave Southern the early lead with a first-inning RBI double to score Sullivan. Molloy tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, then took a 4-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning.
Eng blasted a home run in the sixth inning to cut the Lions' lead in half, but Molloy put up four runs in the bottom half to take an 8-2 lead. In the top of the eighth, Southern loaded the bases before Drewry came to the plate, who hit a bases-clearing double to pull Southern within two runs.
Molloy pulled away in their final at bats, and scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal a 16-5 win.
Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded a stolen base during game one, while
Mike Szturma (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had six strikeouts in his second start of the season.
Game 2: SCSU 7, Molloy 5
Southern rebounded in game two with a come-from-behind victory late. Molloy scored a single run in the second, third, and fourth innings to lead 3-0.
Southern began their comeback in the fifth inning, exploding for five runs to take a 5-3 lead. Southern had just two hits through the first four innings, but
Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) and Christofo led off the fifth with back-to-back hits to put two runners in scoring position. Diaz brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly, Zambito walked, and Sullivan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for Eng. Eng smoked a bases-clearing triple into right field to score all three runners and give Southern their first lead at 4-3. Goggin added an insurance run for the Owls with a sacrifice fly before the end of the inning.
Molloy tied the game in the sixth inning with two runs. Southern rallied again in the bottom of the sixth. Drewry led off the inning with a walk, and
Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) reached on a bunt-single. A throwing error put Drewry at third base before Fedeli stole second base to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Walker lifted a fly ball to right to score Drewry on a sacrifice fly, and Diaz drove home Fedeli with an RBI double.
The Lions put together another rally with two outs in the final inning, but
Pete Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded his third strike out of the inning to strand two runners and allow Southern to escape with a win.
Eng had two hits and three RBI in the win, while Fedeli scored two wins in the second game. Diaz drove in a pair of runs and stole a base.
Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) had seven strikeouts and walked just two in five innings as Southern had 11 strikeouts as a team in the seven inning win.
Notes
- Eng hit his first home run of the season and his ninth with Southern since last season.
- Christofo hit his first home run of his career.
- Drewry has five multi-RBI games this season, and nine for his career. This was also his second-career three-RBI game, and he last recorded one on Feb. 21, 2020 against Mercy.
- Szturma tied his career and season-high in strikeouts with six. He also had six in his last game on Feb. 26 against Felician.
- Steve Phillips also tied his career and season-high in strikeouts with seven, also done on Feb. 26, 2022 against Felician and May 8, 2021 against Le Moyne.
- Zambito now has 11 stolen bases in six games played this season and 69 for his career, good for fourth all-time in program history. One more stolen bases would make him the fourth Owl to steal 70 stolen bases in a career and leave him 10 stolen bases behind Nick Lamberti for the program record of 80.
