SCSU Baseball Tops Saint Thomas Aquinas, 7-2

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball topped Saint Thomas Aquinas, 7-2, at Santaluces Sports Complex in Palm Beach, Fla. With the win, the Owls improve to 11-1 overall while Saint Thomas Aquinas drops to 4-10 on the year.

Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.), Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) all collected two hits and drive in a run. Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a two-run double. On the mound, Joe Nemchek picked up his first win of the season after holding STAC to two runs on nine hits over five innings while striking out four.

Alec Erskine and Tommy Hughes combined to hold STAC scoreless on three hits over the final four innings.

In the first, Tony Zambito was hit by a pitch before Billy Sullivan singled. Eng then delivered a two-run double to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. In the third, Eng was hit by a pitch with two outs before Southern followed with back-to-back doubles by Goggin and DeMartino to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.

STAC answered with a run in the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning, Ferrett doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single by Dave Christoforo (North Haven, Conn.). Zambito then singled to score Ferrett and push the Owls' lead back to four runs, 5-1. The fifth inning saw both teams score again, with Ferrett driving in DeMartino to give the Owls a 6-2 lead.

In the seventh, Sullivan reached on a dropped fly ball, moving to second base. He then read a ball in the dirt to move to third and scored on a throw down the line by STAC's catcher to give the Owls their final run.

Erskine was tagged for a hit in both the sixth and seventh innings but pitched out of both situations. Hughes entered in the eighth before hitting a batter with two outs, and then retiring the final batter of the inning. In the ninth, he gave up a two-out single before striking out the final batter of the game.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 15 against Scoutz USA and then again on Thursday, Mar. 17 at Lynn University.
