LAKE WORTH, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team fell to Bentley, 17-2, in their second game of the day at Santaluces Sports Complex on Friday, March 18, 2022. With the loss, the Owls fall to 12-3 overall, while Falcons improve to 5-10.

Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Owls, including a double and a triple, and Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) struck out three hitters in relief in 2.1 innings pitched and did not allow a run.

How It Happened
Bentley took a 5-0 first inning lead. Southern got on the scoreboard in the third inning after back-to-back hits by Sullivan and Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) began the frame. Southern then executed a double steal, with Sullivan swiping home as Eng took second base. Goggin then singled home Eng for Southern's second run of the inning.

Bentley added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Hughes came in with two outs and recorded his first strikeout to end the inning. Hughes allowed just a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning and struck out two more hitters. He then recorded a retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth.

Bentley scored five runs each in both the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away.

  • Sullivan recorded his second career four-hit game (April 23, 2021 at New Haven). He has seven games this season with at least two hits, including three straight, and four games with at least three hits.

  • Hughes has allowed zero runs in five of his six games this season and has given up just one run in one of his games so far. He has struck out at least three hitters in all six of his relief appearances this season and has allowed no more than one hit total in all six games.
