Sullivan's Walk-Off Hit Leads Baseball By Post

LANTANA, Fla. - Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) tripled home Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team a wild 6-5 walk-off win against Post on March 19, 2022 in their final game of the Florida trip. With the win, the Owls improve to 13-3 overall, while Post falls to 4-15.

Sullivan had two walks to go with his walk-off triple, while Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) had two hits and scored a run. Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) also had two hits, while David Christoforo (North Haven, Conn.) had two RBIs. Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) struck out seven and allowed just two runs and a walk in six innings pitched, while Pete Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) earned the win by pitching four innings in relief with five strikeouts, one walk, and no earned runs allowed.

How It Happened
Post took an early lead in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Southern then scored four consecutive runs to take a 4-1 lead. Christoforo and Berdryczuk singled to put two runners aboard for Zambito with two outs, who singled to score Christoforo to tie the game.

Steve Phillips worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, and Southern took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Southern loaded the bases with no outs after Eng singled, Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) reached on an error, and Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back ground outs by Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) and Christoforo gave Southern a 3-1 lead, and Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) gave the Owls a 4-1 lead after an RBI single scored DeMartino.

Steve Phillips allowed just one hit in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings combined. After Post scored a run in the seventh, Pete Phillips stranded two runners with a strikeout to end the inning. Pete Phillips worked a hitless eighth inning, and Southern took a 4-2 lead into the ninth. Post puts two runners on with one out after a batter reached first base on a strikeout and a wild pitch and on an error. Post tied the game with a two-run single and took a 5-4 lead on a sacrifice fly.

Southern rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Sullivan walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Coggin was hit by a pitch and Drewry walked to load the bases. Christoforo was hit by a pitch to tie the game at five.

Pete Phillips struck out the final two hitters in the tenth after a double. Berdryczuk reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the tenth and Zambito made it first base on a fielder's choice. Sullivan then brought Zambito home with a triple to give the Owls the win.
