SCSU Baseball Falls To Saint Rose, 7-6, In 10 Innings

ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball lost to College of Saint Rose, 7-6 in 10 innings, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Albany, N.Y. The Owls and Golden Knights were originally scheduled to play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game, but the second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain. That game, and a second, seven-inning game, will be played on Sunday, Mar. 27 at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn.

Bill Sullivan was 3-for-6 with two RBI while Connor Goggin also drove in two runs. Jack Drewry and Chad Fedeli also collected two hits, each, while both scored a run for the Owls. 2021 NE10 Second Team pick Spencer Fox spun four scoreless innings in relief for the Owls, holding Saint Rose to three hits while striking out six.

Saint Rose used a four-run first inning to build a lead against the Owls, eventually pushing their lead to 5-0 through the third inning. In the fourth, Andrew Eng singled to left field and moved to second on an error by Saint Rose's centerfielder. Connor Goggin then put the Owls on the board with a triple that scored Eng and cut the Golden Knights' lead to 5-1 before scoring on a ground-out to pull the Owls within three runs, 5-2. The Owls pushed another run across after loading the bases with two outs before Goggin was hit by a pitch to force in Zach Bedryczuk to cut Saint Rose's lead to 5-3.

In the eighth, Jack Drewry led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a ground-out by Mike Ferrett. Dave Christoforo then struck-out, but reached first on a dropped-third strike, which also allowed Drewry to score and cut Saint Rose's lead to one. Izaiah Walker replaced Christoforo on first and moved to second on a single by Chad Fedeli. After Bedryczuk struck out, Bill Sullivan laced a double to left field to score both runners and give the Owls a 6-5 lead.

In the eighth, Tommy Hughes came on in relief of Fox, who entered the game in the fourth inning to replace starter Alec Erskine. Erskine gave up five runs on six hits over three innings before Fox entered the game. Hughes worked through the eighth inning, only giving up a double to hold Saint Rose scoreless. In the ninth, Hughes gave up a one-out triple, followed by a RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.

In the 10th, the Owls loaded the bases with one out as Walker and Fedeli both poked back-to-back singles before Bedryczuk walked. Saint Rose was able to escape the inning unscathed after Sullivan struck out and Eng popped up to third base.

In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Rose managed to manufacture a run for the walk-off win.
