ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team fell to Flagler College, 14-11, in a non-conference matchup at Flagler Lacrosse Field on Saturday, March 19, 2022. The Owls are now 1-3 overall, while Flagler improves to 6-5.
Eight different players scored goals for Southern, led
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) with three and had one assist, while
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) scored two.
Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.), Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.), Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.), Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.), Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.), and
Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) all also scored. Ruel also scooped up a game-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- Flagler scored the first goal of the game 30 seconds in, but Southerns defense held the Saints scoreless for the next 12 minutes before they took a 2-0 lead.
- Shaw scored Southern's first goal immediately after to get the Owls on the board before the end of the period.
Second Quarter
- Both teams exchanged two goals each to begin the second. Flalger scored at the 14:35 and 10:24 marks, and Southern scored with 11:08 and 8:45 remaining. Reilly scored Southern's first goal of the period on a free position shot, while Rowe scored Southern's second to make the score 4-3 Saints.
- Flagler scored four of the next six goals before the end of the half to take a 10-4 lead. Jagodzinski found the back of the net for a goal at the 3:02 mark on a free position shot.
Third Quarter
- Southern and Flagler each scored three goals in the third quarter.
- Flagler scored the first goal, but Feinberg and Ruel scored in a 30-second span to cut the Saints' lead to five.
- Pulisciano off a pass from Rowe in between two Flagler goals before the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- The Owls battled back in the final quarter in their attempted comeback, and outscored Flagler by three in the fourth.
- Rowe scored the first goal a minute into the quarter before Flagler answered. Three straight goals by Southern, two by Takacs and one by Rowe, brought the score to 14-11 with just under three minutes remaining, but Flagler held Southern scoreless after the string of goals to seal the win.
Notes
- Rowe has scored at least three goals in three of her four games this season, and had 11 career three-goal games.
- Rowe has now scored 67 career goals, and has recorded at least one point in and has recorded at least one goal or one assist in 34 of her 35 career games.
- Takacs has recorded at least one point in 19 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019.
- Ruel's six ground balls were a new career-high, and were the most by a Southern player this season.
