Lacrosse Defeated By No. 20 Saint Anselm In Northeast 10 Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team fell to No. 20 ranked Saint Anselm, 17-6, in their Northeast 10 Conference opener on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Grappone Stadium. The Owls are now 1-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in the NE10, while Saint Anselm improve to 1-0 overall and in the NE10.

Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.) led Southern with three goals scored, while Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.), Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.), and Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) all scored one goal each. Jagodzinski and Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.) also recorded assists. Shaw also recorded game-highs in ground balls and caused turnovers with three.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Saint Anselm scored six straight goals to begin the game before two quick goals by the Owls cut into the Hawks' lead to end the quarter. Feinberg and Ruel teamed up for a goal after a Saint Anselm turnover, and another turnover led to a goal by Pulisciano off a pass from Gray.
Second Quarter
  • Saint Anselm outscored Southern 4-0 in the second quarter to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.
  • After Saint Anslem scored three goals in the first five minutes of the quarter, the Owls' defense kept the Hawks scoreless for the final 10 minutes before Saint Anselm scored to end the half. 
Third Quarter
  • The Hawks scored the quarter's first three goals to extend their lead. Pulisciano again got Southern's offense going at the end of the quarter.
  • Pulisciano scored two goals in the final two minutes to cut the lead to 13-4 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • Southern carried over their momentum from the end of the third quarter and into the fourth with goals from Takacs and Shaw, with Shaw's coming on a free-position shot.
  • Saint Anselm scored the final three goals of the game to win 17-6. 

Notes
  • Takacs has recorded at least one point in 18 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019.
  • Pulisciano's three goals were a new career-high in a game. 
  • Jagodzisnki and Shaw, along with Takacs, have scored in all three games this season. 
  • Shaw's three caused turnovers were a new career-high.
