Tim Shea Wins 500th Career Game As SCSU Baseball Sweeps Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University Baseball Head Coach Tim Shea won his 500th career game with a win against Adelphi in the first game of a doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls quickly gave Shea his 501st career win with a sweep of the Panthers, 16-0 and 4-1.

With the sweep, the Owls improve to 19-6 overall and 6-3 in the Northeast 10 Conference while Adelphi falls to 16-7-1 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

With the milestone, Shea becomes the first coach in SCSU Athletics history to reach 500 wins in a career. Currently Owls volleyball head coach Lisa Barbaro passed the 500-win mark with combined win totals from softball and volleyball, while Shea is the first coach to do it with one team.

Andrew Eng led the Owls with four hits and five RBI including a three-run homer in the first game. Mike DeMartino also homered for the Owls as part of a three-hit day, while Jack Drewry, Zach Bedryczuk and Mike Ferrett all collected three hits in the twin bill.

Steve Phillips improved to 6-1 on the season after holding Adelphi scoreless over six innings while scattering four hits and striking out seven. Nick Guarino improved to 7-0 after giving up one run on six hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Tommy Hughes converted his fifth save of the season with two innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball.

In the first game, Southern exploded for nine runs in their first at-bat, with Eng's seventh home run of the season getting the Owls started. Chad Fedeli drove in two runs, before Eng came up against and drove in two more runs with a double. Eng finished the first game a triple shy of the cycle after going 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. DeMartino added a homer in the fifth inning and was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mike Ferrett was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and three runs scored.

In the second game, Adelphi struck first when Jose Matos drove in Kyle Olson to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead after their first at-bat. In the bottom of the inning, the Owls capitalized on a pair of errors to push three runs across and take a two-run lead, 3-1. In the fifth, Connor Goggin singled home Bill Sullivan to give the Owls a 4-1 lead.

Southern will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 13 when it travels to take on University of Bridgeport before returning home to host Stonehill on Thursday, Apr. 14.
