Erskine Tosses Complete Game Shutout As Owls Down Bridgeport, 4-0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated Bridgeport, 4-0, behind a complete game shutout by freshman Alec Erskine (Killingworth, Conn.). With the win, the Owls improve to 20-6 overall while the Purple Knights drop to 11-15 on the season.

Erskine was dominant for all nine innings as he allowed just six hits while walking one and striking out four. In the third inning, Bridgeport strung together back-to-back hits before Erskine picked-off the lead runner to cool the Purple Knights' threat. He cruised the rest of the way, retiring 14 of the next 15 hitters before pitching out of a jam in the eighth and pitching a hitless ninth.

The first-year Owl improved to 2-2 on the season while dropping his ERA to 5.48. The spot-starter has appeared in nine games for the Owls with is blanking of the Purple Knights coming in his fourth career start.

Bridgeport's Anthony Martino was equally impressive to start before the Owls broke through in the top of the fifth inning. After Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) walked, Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) dropped down a two-out bunt single to keep the inning alive. After Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) worked a walk, Bedryczuk scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Andrew Eng then singled up the middle to plate Zambito and Sullivan and give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

Eng led off the eighth inning with a single before moving to second on a failed pick-off and then to third on Mike DeMartino's (New Haven, Conn.) fly ball to right field. Jack Drewry was hit by a pitch and stole second, allowing Eng to steal home on the throw down to second base.

Eng has been red hot as of late and is currently hitting .500 (20-40) over a 12-game hitting streak, including a 2-for-2 day against the Purple Knights. Eng now has 20 RBI and 16 runs scored in the streak to lead the Owls. Bedryczuk has also hit safely in three-straight games and has reached base in his last five games.

The Owls have a quick turnaround as they host Stonehill on Thursday, Apr. 14 at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. Southern will then travel to Stonehill on Saturday, Apr. 16 for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
