Eng, Sullivan Homer, Phillips Pitches Gem As Owls Defeat Stonehill, 8-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball topped Stonehill, 8-1, in a non-conference match at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, the Owls improve to 21-6 overall while Stonehill goes to 13-20 on the season.

Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) continues to produce for the Owls as the finished with a 2-for-4 day highlighted by a two-run homer and a RBI single. Bill Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also homered for the Owls as part of a 2-for-5 day that saw him score three of the Owls' runs. Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.), Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) and Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) also drove in runs for the Owls.

Stonehill jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat as Blaine Lidsky doubled home Mike Farragher. It proved to be the lone blemish on an otherwise masterful performance by Owls starter Steve Phillips. Phillips improved to 7-1 on the season after holding the Skyhawks to the single run on four hits over six innings while striking out four.

In the bottom of the first, Eng connected on his eighth home run of the season when he jumped on a 1-2 pitch and hit it on a line the opposite way, clearing the left-center field wall to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Connor Goggin then drew a walk before moving to second on a passed ball and scoring on Drewry's double to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.

After the one-run first inning by Stonehill, Phillips cruised through the fifth inning, holding the Skyhawks to a single hit over the next four innings while not allowing a runner to reach second base. In the sixth, Phillips struck-out the first two batters in the inning and appeared to be out of the inning before a fielding error extended the inning. After Stonehill loaded the bases, Phillips got Chris Roberti to pop-up to center field to end the inning.

In the third inning, Sullivan led off the inning with his second home run of the season, turning on a shoulder-high fastball and crushing down the line to give the Owls a three-run lead, 4-1. It was Sullivan again in the bottom of the eighth when he led off the inning with a double over the head of the left fielder. After he moved to third on a wild pitch, Eng lined a single over the head of the shortstop to score Sullivan. Another wild pitch moved Eng into scoring position for Goggin to drive in before Mike DeMartino and Drewry walked to load the bases.

Mike Ferrett pinch hit and hit a towering shot to center field that was caught at the wall, deep enough to score Goggin for the sacrifice fly. DeMartino scored on a dropped-third passed ball to Zach Bedryczuk to give the Owls the 8-1 lead.
