NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team lost to No. 21 nationally ranked New Haven, 12-10, in a Northeast 10 conference matchup on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, the Owls drop to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the NE10, while the Chargers improve to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the NE10.
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) recorded her 100th career point in the game, becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the mark.
Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Owls' offense with three goals, while
Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.) and
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) added two goals. Rowe had a goal and an assist and
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.), and
Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) scored one goal each.
Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Shaw caused four turnovers and
Hannah Holmes (Colchester, Conn.) caused three turnovers.
Jettke Gray (Easton, Conn.) had a game-high six draw controls.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- Both teams exchanged goals in the opening two minutes, with Jagodzinski getting Southern on the scoreboard after New Haven grabbed an early lead. Feinberg followed up Jagodzinski's goal with one herself at the 10:00 mark to give Southern a 2-1 lead.
- After New Haven tied the game, Takacs scored a goal off an assist from Rowe. The Chargers then scored on a free-position shot to tie the game again, 3-3, after the first quarter.
Second Quarter
- Only three goals were scored in the second quarter, with New Haven scoring two of them to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
- Ruel gave Southern the lead back with a goal with 11:30 remaining. New Haven scored consecutive goals in a minute-and-a-half span to retake the lead.
Third Quarter
- Southern got off to a strong start in the second half to retake the lead for the fourth time. Shaw began the quarter with a goal on a free-position shot, then Feinberg scored two minutes later to give Southern a 6-5 lead.
- New Haven again rallied back with two unanswered goals, but over the course of the final 10 minutes of the game as Southern was held scoreless after their initial spurt to begin the quarter.
- New Haven tied it with 9:17 remaining, then a goal in the final second of the quarter put the Chargers ahead 7-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
- Takacs immediately tied the game to begin the quarter on a free-position shot.
- New Haven went on a 4-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 11-7, with just under five minutes remaining.
- The Owls stormed back to make it a one-goal game with just under two minutes left. Rowe scored on a free-position shot at the 2:47 mark, then Southern won the draw control and Shaw scored to cut the lead to two.
- Southern again won the draw control, and Ruel scored with 1:45 remaining to cut the lead down to cut the lead to one.
- New Haven added a final goal with just over a minute remaining to escape with a two-goal win.
Notes
- Rowe became the ninth player in program history to record 100 goals. She joined Nicole Healey (213), Samantha Cozzolino (196), Carolynn Keal (161), Allison Kownacki (130), Sarah Muise (119), Teresa Monfredo (107), Kennedy Sherman (105), and Elaina Heiple (104).
- Rowe reached the 100-point plateau by scoring 83 goals and having 18 assists, good for 101 career points currently, and has recorded a point in 39 of her 42 career games.
- Takacs has recorded 89 points in her career, and has recorded at least one point in 26 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019. Takacs has also scored in every game this season, and scored multiple goals in all but one game.
- Feinberg tied her career-high in goals with three, last done on March 31, 2021 at American International, her first career game.
- Ruel recorded her third game with at least two goals this season.
- Shaw has scored in every game this season, and set a new career-high in caused turnovers with four.
- Jagodzinski's goal was the 30th of her career.
- Robbins tied her career-high in ground balls with three, done three other times and last on March 26, 2022.
- Robbins also has caused at least three turnovers in four games this season, the most by a Southern player since Keal had five games with at least three caused turnovers in 2018.
- Holmes tied a career-high three caused turnovers.
- Gray's six draw controls were a season-high.
- Southern's nine turnovers were a season-low, and their fewest in a game since having five on March 12, 2019, also against New Haven.
- New Haven's two-point win is their smallest margin of victory over the Owls all-time, and the 12 goals scored by the Chargers is tied for the second fewest they have ever scored against Southern.
