RINDGE, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team fell to Franklin Pierce, 12-11, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Sodexo Field. The Owls fall to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the NE10, while the Ravens improve to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the NE10.
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) had a huge game for the Owls, as she scored five goals and had two assists for a game-high seven points.
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) scored four goals, while
Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.) and
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) each had one goal. Shaw also added an assist and two ground balls.
Maggie Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) recorded three ground balls and caused two turnovers, while
Hannah Holmes (Colchester, Conn.) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- Franklin Pierce scored the first goal of the game in the first minute. Southern then scored three consecutive goals in a span of five minutes to take the lead.
- Takacs scored the first two goals for Southern to tie and take the lead. Ruel then scored with 7:23 remaining to give Southern a 3-1 lead.
- The Ravens then scored three straight goals to end the quarter and took a 5-3 lead.
Second Quarter
- Franklin Pierce opened the second quarter with four consecutive goals.
- Rowe scored right before the end of the half off an assist from Shaw to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Third Quarter
- Southern was able to find themselves offensively in the third quarter, and buckled down on defense, as they outscored Franklin Pierce 5-2.
- Rowe carried the momentum of her goal before halftime into the third quarter, as she scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Takacs. Takacs followed that up with a goal at the 7:29 mark to cut the lead to 8-6.
- Franklin Pierce scored to stop Southern's run, but Rowe continued her hot stretch with back-to-back goals in a minute to cut the lead down to 9-8.
- Franklin Pierce responded with a goal to extend the lead, but Shaw answered right back to make it a one-score game again to end the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- Both teams played evenly in the final quarter, with two goals from each side.
- Franklin Pierce scored the first two goals and led 12-9 with just under 13 minutes remaining. Takacs scored the final two goals for Southern, with her last coming with 18 seconds remaining in the game to cut the score down to 12-11.
Notes
- Takacs recorded a new career-high in goals with her five. She previously had four in a game three times, including this season on Feb. 23 at Molloy.
- Takacs had her second game this season with at least seven points (also Feb. 23 at Molloy) and third of her career.
- With her two assists today, Takacs now has 33 for her career, two away from tying Kennedy Sherman for fourth in program history.
- Takacs has scored in every game this season, and has scored at least two goals in seven of eight games, and at least three goals in three of the games.
- Takacs has recorded at least one point in 23 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019.
- Rowe has scored at least three goals in three consecutive games, and has scored at least three goals in six of Southern's eight games this season.
- Rowe now has 79 career goals and 94 career points, and has 14 career games with at least three goals.
- Rowe has recorded at least one goal or one assist in 37 of her 39 career games.
- Rowe became the first Southern player with at least three goals in three consecutive games since Steph Seymour did so from March 21-March 27, 2019 and Samantha Cozzolino from March 19-March 30, 2019 (five games).
- Shaw also has scored in every game this season.
- Kallinich recorded career-highs in ground balls (three) and caused turnovers (two).
- Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had a career-high four draw controls.
- Sophie Kurtz (Cheshire, Conn.) equaled her career-high in saves with 10, also done on March 19, 2022 against Flagler.
- The last six games against Franklin Pierce have been decided by two goals or less, and the last six by three goals or less.
