GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team was defeated by No. 3 nationally ranked Adelphi, 18-10, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Motamed Field on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. With the loss, the Owls fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the NE10, while Panthers improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the NE10.

Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) and Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) both recorded hat tricks for the Owls, while Rowe had two assists and Takacs had one. Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.) scored two goals, and Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) and Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) scored one goal each. Maggie Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) had four ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Adelphi scored the first five goals of the game to take control of the game early.
  • Rowe put Southern on the board with a goal on a free-position shot, as she fired a shot past Adelphi's goalkeeper to the back of the net.
  • Kallinich scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers in the first quarter, while Robbins also had two caused turnovers.
Second Quarter
  • Southern settled down offensively in the second, as Takacs started the quarter off with a goal to cut the lead down to 6-2.
  • Three straight goals extended the lead for Adelphi, but Takacs made a nice pass to Rowe as she scored her second goal of the game.
  • Adelphi tacked on another goal before Jagodzisnki scored on a free-position shot. The Panthers scored twice in the final minute to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.
  • Kallinich added two more ground balls in the quarter to give her four in the first half, and Robbins also scooped up two ground balls and caused another turnover.
  • The four goals by Southern are tied for the most scored against Adelphi in any half of a game this season by any team.

Third Quarter
  • The Owls got off to a quick start in the third quarter. Ruel scored at the 12:08 mark and Rowe scored with 9:33 remaining to cut the lead down to 11-6.
  • Since the initial 5-0 Adelphi lead, Southern and the Panthers played each other evenly, 6-6, from the 12 second mark in the first quarter up until just over three minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Adelphi was finally able to break through with just over three minutes remaining, and scored five unanswered goals to end the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • Southern outscored Adelphi 4-2 in the final quarter. Takacs and Rowe again connected on a goal, with Takacs scoring with 11:24 remaining. Ruel then scored on a free-position.
  • Adelphi tacked on one final goal at the 6:56 mark, but Southern scored the final two goals of the game. Rowe assisted on a Takacs goal once more and Shaw found the back of the net to give Southern their 10th goal.

Notes
  • With her five points today, Rowe now has 99 for her career.

  • Rowe now has 82 career goals, and has 15 career games with at least three goals. Her 82 career goals are the eighth most in program history.
  • Rowe has recorded at least one goal or one assist in 38 of her 40 career games.
  • Rowe became the first Southern player with at least three goals in four consecutive games since Samantha Cozzolino did so from March 19-March 30, 2019 (five games).
  • With one assist today, Takacs now has 34 for her career, one away from tying Kennedy Sherman for fourth in program history.
  • With her second goal of the game, Takacs reached 50 for her career. She also has 85 points in her career.
