NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team defeated The College of Saint Rose on Senior Day, 12-9, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field on Saturday, April 23, 2022. With the win, the Owls attained a program-record tying single season win total and improved to 4-10 overall and 3-8 in the NE10, while the Golden Knights fell to 7-8 overall and 3-8 in the NE10. Southern also set a new program record for wins in a season at Jess Dow Field with their fourth, and recorded their first ever win against a team in a season that was ranked at one point during the year.
Seniors
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) and
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) led the offense for Southern, with Rowe scoring four goals and dishing out an assist for five points and Takacs having three goals and an assist for four points.
Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had three goals to tie her career-high, and
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) and
Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.) added one goal each, while Reilly also had an assist. Senior
Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) had four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and five draw controls, while
Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.), another senior, had two caused turnovers.
Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had three ground balls and she and
Liney White (Madison, Conn.) both had three caused turnovers.
Rileigh Bunton (Pelham, N.H.) had eight saves in goal for the Owls.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- Both teams traded goals throughout the duration of the quarter, with Southern coming out on top after the first 15 minutes up 3-2.
- Takacs scored less than a minute into the game to give Southern the early lead, and scored her second goal on a free-position shot to give Southern the lead back with 9:34 remaining.
- Feinberg scored in the final seconds of the quarter to give Southern the lead again.
Second Quarter
- Both teams played evenly in the second quarter by scoring three goals each.
- Rowe scored first to give Southern the largest lead of the half at 4-2 with 11:40 remaining. Saint Rose was able to tie the game with back-to-back goals in a two-minutes stretch.
- Takacs scored her third goal and second free-position goal of the half at the 3:18 mark to retake the lead, but the Golden Knights tied the game once more.
- Feinberg again scored in the final seconds of the quarter and gave Southern a 6-5 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
- The Owls' defense stepped up in the third quarter and held Saint Rose to zero goals.
- Rowe scored all three goals for Southern in the quarter, with the first coming at the 6:55 mark. She scored off an assist from Reilly with 1:28 remaining, and scored with 21 seconds left on a free-position shot.
Fourth Quarter
- Feinberg opened the quarter with a goal just over a minute into the final period to give Southern a 10-5 lead, their largest of the day, with Rowe recording the assist.
- Saint Rose rallied though by scoring three consecutive goals in less than two minutes to trim the lead to 10-8 with 9:04 left.
- Southern remained composed, however, and scored two goals in a one minute stretch to up the lead back up to four at 12-8 with 7:03 remaining. Takacs connected with Shaw to give Southern breathing room, and Reilly scored on a free-position shot to cap off the scoring for the Owls.
Notes
- With the victory, Southern tied a program record for wins in a season, also done in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
- They tied their program record for NE10 wins in a season as well, also done in 2007, 2008, and 2018.
- Southern is now 2-0 against Saint Rose, and have held them in single-digits in goals both times.
- Saint Rose was ranked No. 25 nationally on April 4. With the Owls' victory, they recorded their first ever win against a team that was at some point ranked during the season. It is also their first win over an opponent that was receiving national recognition since American International in 2016, who received votes from week six-nine in the national polls.
- Rowe now has eight games this season and 16 for her career with at least three goals and four games with at least four goals and nine for her career.
- Rowe has now scored 90 career goals and has 109 career points, and has recorded at least one goal or one assist in 42 of her 45 career games. She now ranks sixth all-time in program history in career points.
- Rowe has 12 assists this season, a career-high and tied for ninth most in a single-season in program history.
- Takacs now has 97 career points and has recorded at least one point in 29 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019.
- Takacs recorded her 36th career assist, moving her into fifth place in program history for career assists.
- Takacs and Shaw have scored in every game this season.
- Shaw recorded her sixth consecutive game with multiple caused turnovers and now has 28 on the season, the third most in program history.
- Feinberg tied her career-high for goals in a game with three, also done on April 13, 2022 vs New Haven and March 31, 2021 at American International. She has scored nine goals in the last four games.
- Jagodzinski set a new career-high with three caused turnovers, and tied a career-high with four ground balls, last done on April 30, 2021 vs New Haven.
- Robbins tied her career high in ground balls with three, done four other times and last on April 13, 2022 vs New Haven. She also recorded her fifth game this season with at least three caused turnovers.
- Reilly recorded her second career goal (first since March 19 vs Flagler), first career assist, and first career game with multiple points.
- Southern's nine goals allowed equaled their fewest in an NE10 game this season. They also allowed only nine against Saint Michael's on March 26, 2022.
- Southern caused 20 turnovers in a game for the second time this season. They caused 22 against Post on March 2. It's also their most in an NE10 game since causing 24 turnovers against Saint Michael's on March 31, 2012.
