SCSU Baseball Sweeps Pace, 14-5 and 3-2

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball swept a doubleheader at Pace, 14-5 and 3-2, to finish the four-game set against the Setters with three wins in the series. The Owls improve to 26-9 overall and 10-5 in the Northeast 10 while Pace drops to 18-16 overall and 9-10 in conference play.

Tony Zambito and Billy Sullivan both collected four hits in the twin bill while Andrew Eng drove in five runs across two games, with a pair of doubles and his team-leading ninth home run of the season. Tyshaun Diaz also got his first career start on the mound for the Owls and picked up the win after holding Pace to two hits on four hits over four innings.

The first game of the doubleheader was a bit of a rollercoaster, as the Owls overcame a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, and then win it in extra innings with a 10-run inning. With Pace ahead, 4-0, Eng cut the Setters lead in half with a two-run dinger before Mike DeMartino and Jack Drewry both scored after a pair of Pace errors. Zach Bedryczuk drove in Drewry with the tying run.

The Owls capitalized in the extra frame off of two Pace errors, while stringing together five hits top push across 10 runs and take a 14-4 lead. After Drewry, Izaiah Walker and Bedryczuk walked, Drewry scored on an error by the shortstop on Chad Fedeli's infield ground ball. Tony Zambito then drove in two runs with a double before two more came around on Sullivan's single.

Eng drove in two more runs and then scored on an error on a ball hit by DeMartino. Drewry doubled home DeMartino, and then scored on an error on a ball hit by Walker. Walker and Bedryczuk moved up a base on a wild pitch, before Walker scored on another one.

Meanwhile, Tommy Hughes kept the Setters off the board after coming in in relief and allowing just one hit in an inning pitched to pick up the win. Steve Phillips took the no-decision after giving up four runs – three earned – on six hits over six innings.

In the second game, Sullivan drove in Zambito with the game's first run before Pace answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. In the third, Zambito singled to short and then stole second base. Sullivan reached on an error, which allowed Zambito to move to third, before Eng doubled down the left field line to plate both runs and give the Owls a 3-2 lead.

On the mound, Diaz was solid after the first inning that saw him walk three batters. He allowed one batter to reach in each of the second and third innings and pitched out of jam in the fourth. Spencer Fox then entered the game in the fifth and struck out the side. He made it four-in-a-row in the sixth, before working around a walk and then struck out two more batters in the seventh to convert on the three-inning save.

Southern is back in action when it hosts Adelphi on Wednesday, Apr. 27 at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
