SCSU Baseball Loses To AIC, 5-4 In 10 Innings

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball lost to American International, 5-4 in 10 innings, in a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division matchup in Springfield, Mass. With the loss, the Owls drop to 26-10 overall and 10-6 in NE10 play while the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-28 overall and 5-15 in conference play.

Andrew Eng, Billy Sullivan and Zach Bedryczuk all collected two hits on the day while Tony Zambito scored twice, including the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, while also recording one stolen base. Izaiah Walker and Jack Drewry also drove in runs for the Owls.

Nick Guarino took the no-decision after giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings. Spencer Fox held AIC scoreless over three innings, while giving up just one hit. Tommy Hughes took the loss after giving up the tying and winning runs in extra innings.

The Owls scored the game's first run in their first at-bat when Tony Zambito reached on an error to start the game. He scored on Andrew Eng's double down the left field line to give the Owls the early 1-0 lead.

AIC answered in the bottom half of the inning when their first three hitters all singled with Jackson Haker driving in the tying run. Yellow Jackets' starter Jay Chiappetta and Owls hurler Nick Guarino traded scoreless innings until the fourth when AIC's Dalton Quinn connected for a solo home run.

In the sixth, Haker tripled to lead-off the inning before scoring on a single by Michael Navarro to take a two-run lead, 3-1. Spencer Fox came-on in relief for the Owls and after a pair of scoreless innings, Southern struck for two runs in the top of the ninth. Eng flew out to left-center field to start the inning before Connor Goggin singled to right field, followed by a single by Mike DeMartino to move Goggin to third.

After Jack Drewry struck-out, Izaiah Walker singled to right-center to score Goggin and move DeMartino to third base. Zach Bedryczuk then followed with a single to center field to score DeMartino and tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Fox retired the Yellow Jackets in order.

In the top of the 10th, Zambito led off with a rocket past the Yellow Jackets' diving shortstop to give the Owls the go-ahead run on-base. The Owls' all-time leader in stolen bases then swiped his 28th base of the season to move into scoring position. Billy Sullivan then bunted for a single to move Zambito to third base. AIC then walked Eng to load the bases.

With the bases loaded and no outs, AIC's Hayden Mutz entered the game and struck-out Goggin and DeMartino, before Drewry worked a nine-pitch walk to force Zambito home to give the Owls a 4-3 lead.

In the 10th, Hughes entered the game and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up a two-out base hit with the tying run reaching base. Caffrey then singled off the glove of Drewry at first base, allowing Nazarro to move to third base with the tying run. AIC loaded the bases when Quinn was hit by a pitch before Chad Lavelle singled to plate two runs and give the Yellow Jackets the 5-4 win.

The Owls return to Springfield on Saturday, Apr. 30 to face AIC in a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start.

  • DeMartino's single in the 10th inning was the 199th hit of his career.
  • Eng's RBI double was his 13th two-bagger of the season as well as his 47th RBI.
  • The Owls outfielder has now driven in six runs in his last three games.
  • With two hits against AIC, Billy Sullivan has now hit in 10-straight games in which he is hitting .390 (16-41). He also has 12 runs and seven RBI.
  • Tony Zambito has five hits in his last 11 bats with five runs scored in his last three games. He also has five stolen bases in his last three games to give him 28 on the season.
