SCSU Baseball Downs Saint Rose, 7-6, As Eng Homers Twice

ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated the College of Saint Rose, 7-6, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Albany, N.Y. With the win, the Owls improve to 17-6 overall and 4-3 in the NE10 while Saint Rose drops to 11-15 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The win was also head coach Tim Shea's 499th of his career.

Andrew Eng was 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double while driving in four runs for the day. Eng's first home run of the afternoon gave the Owls' a 2-1 lead in the sixth while his second home run changed a 4-2 Golden Knights' lead to a 5-4 lead for the Owls in the eighth inning. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Tony Zambito was 2-for-4 with two RBI, both scoring Fedeli.

On the mound, Pete Phillips picked up the win in relief after pitching three solid innings for the Owls to close the game. Phillips scattered three hits, and gave up two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth, to improve to 2-0 on the year. Phillips has yet to allow an earned run this season and boasts a 0.00 ERA over 15 innings pitched out of the bullpen. Tommy Hughes entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to nail now his fourth save of the season.

The Owls got on the board when Chad Fedeli singled in the third inning and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Tony Zambito then ripped a full-count single to left field to score Fedeli and tie the game at 1-1.

After Eng's home run in the sixth, the Golden Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, 4-2. In the eighth, Zambito and Billy Sullivan both walked to lead off the inning before Eng queued up the now semi-regular heroics with his sixth home run of the season.

The Owls received solid pitching performances from the start with wins-leader Nick Guarino hurling five innings of one-run, three-hit ball before giving way to Spencer Fox in the sixth inning. Fox lasted 2/3 of the inning and may have escaped the inning but was tagged for two unearned runs, while Alec Erskine also gave up a run in relief before Peter Phillips entered the game in the seventh.

In the eighth, Phillips gave up a lead-off single and then retired the next two batters before giving up a two-out walk. He then sent a wild pitch to the backstop, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. With the Golden Knights threatening, Phillips got the final out on a fly ball to left.

In the top of the ninth, Fedeli lined his second hit of the day to center field and then advanced a base on a wild pitch. Zambito delivered his second RBI single of the afternoon to score Fedeli and give the Owls a 6-4 lead. After Eng was intentionally walked, both runners moved up a base and Connor Goggin drew a walk to load the bases. Mike DeMartino hit a ground ball to second to score Zambito and give the Owls a 7-4 lead.

Saint Rose rallied in their final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth and pushed two runs across after another error extended the inning. Hughes came on with two outs and the bases loaded before getting the Golden Knights batter to foul out to end the game.

Southern Connecticut is scheduled to host Adelphi on Saturday, Apr. 9 and Sunday, Apr. 10 for a pair of doubleheaders on back-to-back days. Owls fans should visit SCSUOwls.com for up-to-the-minute schedule changes, as inclement weather threatens Saturday's twin bill.
