SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's track and field team won the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 14th, 2022 on the campus of Bryant University. It is Southern's sixth New England Outdoor Championship since 2011, the most over that timeframe, as they also won the title in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2019. The Owls' 10 event championships, and broke four SCSU program records and three New England Championship Meet records.
Southern scored 170.5 points, their most ever in a New England Outdoor Championship Meet and the second most since 2008 by any school. Only University of Rhode Island in 2021 scored more, with 203.83 points.
Individual Champions
- Nigel Green (Shirley, N.Y.) won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with record breaking times. In the 100-meter, he finished with a time of 10.34 setting a new SCSU program record and breaking the New England Championship Meet record set in 2002. In the 200-meter, he finished with a time of 20.72 to reclaim the SCSU program record.
- Eli Henry (Stratford, Conn.) won the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.80, a new program record.
- Sachin Manning (Bridgeport, Conn.) won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.96.
- Terrell Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.) won the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:48.99.
- The team of Tariq Phillips (Waterbury, Conn.), Henry, Christ N'Dabian (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Green won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.57, 0.01 seconds short of the New England Championship Meet record and 0.03 seconds short of the program record.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Ramsley Exantus (Stratford, Conn.), Phillips, N'Dabian, and Manning won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:12.25.
- Turner Kelly (Amityville, N.Y.) won the shot put and hammer throws. In the shot put, he shattered the program and New England Championship Meet records with a throw of 19.66 meters. The New England Championship record was set in 1984. He also had a throw of 60.88 meters in the hammer.
- Jordan Davis (Wallingford, Conn.) finished in first place in the javelin throw and broke the New England Championship Meet record set in 1993 with a throw of 71.83 meters
Top Finishers
- Eli Henry (Stratford, Conn.) finished in second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.18.
- Milan Spisek (Easton, Conn.) finished in second place in the pole vault with a mark of 4.90 meters, while Nate Llanos (Danbury, Conn.) finished in sixth place with a mark of 4.70 meters.
- In the 400-meter hurdles, Exantus finished in third place with a personal-best time of 52.64.
- In the 5000-meter run, Chris LeBeau (Bristol, Conn.) finished in third place with a time of 14.43.52.
- Bernardo Mbaya (Waterbury, Conn.) finished in third place in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 17.41 meters, while Cameron Belton (Baltic, Conn.) finished in fourth place with a throw of 17.38 meters. Natanael Barbosa Torres (Willimantic, Conn.) finished in eighth place with a throw of 16.05 meters and Jacob Meadows (New Milford, Conn.) finished in 10th place with a throw of 15.41 meters.
- Kelly also finished in fourth place in the discus with a personal-best throw of 50.46 meters, and Mbaya in ninth place with a personal-best throw of 48.53 meters.
- In the long jump, Jaylynn Cundiff (Brockton, Mass.) finished in fourth place with a leap of 6.97 meters.
- Daniel Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) finished in fifth place in the pole vault with a personal-best throw of 60.04 meters.
- Jonathan Volpe (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished in ninth place in the 1500-meter run with a personal-best time of 3:50.99.
- The 4x800-meter relay team of Marquis Whyte (New London, Conn.), Shea Kenney (Groton, Conn.), Volpe, and Patterson finished in second place with a time of 7:37.08, the fastest by a Southern 4x800-meter relay team since having a time of 7:31.81 on May 4, 2013.

Shane Smith (Pawcatuck, Conn.) currently sits in fifth place in the decathlon with 3288 points.

Championship Notes
- Green won his second ever 100-Meter Dash Championship (2019) and first ever 200-Meter Dash Championship. He has finished in first or second place in all four of his 100-meter dash New England Championship races. Southern had not had a 100-meter dash New England Champion since at least before 2008 before Green, and the last 200-meter champion for Southern was Twayne Forth in 2013.
- Green broke his own 100-meter dash program record he previously set during the 2021 NCAA National Championships. The meet record he broke was set by Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng of UMass-Amherst, when he ran a 10.38 in 2002.
- Green also broke the SCSU program record in the 200 meter dash, which was set by Henry on April 23, 2022.
- Green now owns the all-time NCAA, New England, and SCSU record in the 300-meter dash, SCSU record in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and distance medley relays, NE10 Championship Meet record in the 100-meter and 4x100-meter relay, and New England Championship Meet record in the 100-meter.
- Henry became the first SCSU athlete to win the 400-meter run since Selasi Lumax in 2013. Henry's time also broke the SCSU record that was set by Larry Redden in 1994.
- Manning became the first SCSU athlete to win the 400-meter hurdles championship since Logan Sharpe in 2013. His time of 51.96 was the sixth fastest in program history. Manning also won the NE10 400-Meter Hurdles Championship.
- Patterson became the first SCSU athlete to win the 1500-meter run championship since at least 2008.
- The team of Phillips, Henry, N'Dabian, and Green became the first 4x100-meter relay championship team since Yakabu Ibrahim, Green, Orrin Parke, and Aaron Rattley in 2018.
- Southern has now won back-to-back New England 4x400-Meter Relay Championships, with N'Dabian and Manning being part of both teams.
- Kelly has won back-to-back shot put championships. He broke his own program record he previously set on March 24. The meet record he broke was set by Art McDermott of Boston University, when he had a throw of 19.53 meters in 1984.
- Kelly also became the first SCSU athlete to win the hammer throw since Tresley Dupont in 2016.
- Davis has now won the NE10 and New England Javelin Championships in back-to-back years. He has finished in the top three in nine of his 10 meets in the javelin in his career, and has won four of five meets this season.
- Davis broke his own SCSU program record with his throw of 71.83 meters. The previous mark he set was on March 24, 2022 with a throw of 70.05 meters. The New England Championship Meet record he also broke was set in 1993 by John Taylor of Brown University at 71.34 meters.
- Davis became the first back-to-back New England Javelin Throw Champion since at least 2008. He is the first SCSU athlete to ever win two New England Javelin Throw Championships.
