Davis Wins NCAA Javelin Title As Men's Track And Field Wraps Of Final Day Of National Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Jordan Davis (Wallingford, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's track and field team won the Javelin Championship on the third day of the NCAA National Championship on Saturday, May 28, 2022 on the campus of Grand Valley State University. Davis won the event with a new school record throw of 72.54, the 11th best mark in Division II history, eighth best throw ever at the NCAA Division II Championships, and best throw in all of the Division II season. Davis became the second SCSU Javelin National Champion, joining Chris Sagnella in 1992. Davis also became the first SCSU male student-athlete to win an outdoor national title since Dan Bourque won the hammer throw in 1998, and the first SCSU male student-athlete to win a national title since Nick Lebron won the indoor heptathlon in 2014. To begin his collegiate career, Davis has now won back-to-back Northeast 10 and New England Javelin titles, been named an All-American in both seasons, earning First-Team All-American honors this season, and was the 2021 NE10 Outdoor Rookie of the Year in addition to this season's national title.
 

As a team, Southern finished in 15th place with 19 points and eight All-Americans, including six First-Team All-Americans. It's the first time since 1981 and 1982 Southern has finished in the top 15 in back-to-back National Championship meets, as the Owls also finished 10th last season. 

Turner Kelly (Amityville, N.Y.) finished in third place in the shot put with a throw of 19.00 meters and earned First-Team All-American honors. Kelly's placing tied him with himself in 2021 and Michael Cameron in 2015 for highest in the shot put at the NCAA National Championship, while his throw was the best for a Southern athlete at the National Championship. Cameron Belton (Baltic, Conn.) finished with a throw of 17.37 meters and in 14th place. 

The 4x400-meter relay team of  Sachin Manning (Bridgeport, Conn.)Eli Henry (Stratford, Conn.)Ramsley Exantus (Stratford, Conn.) and Nigel Green (Shirley, N.Y.) finished in sixth place with a time of 3:09.53 to earn First-Team All-American honors. It's the second fastest time by Southern at the NCAA National Championships, behind the team of  Twayne ForthLogan SharpeJimm Guerrier, and Selasi Lumax school record time of 3:07.04. 

The 4x100-meter relay team of Tariq Phillips (Waterbury, Conn.), Henry, Christ N'Dabian (Bridgeport, Conn.)and Green finished in ninth place with a time of 40.66 and earned Second-Team All-American honors. It was the best time by a Southern 4x100-meter relay team in the NCAA National Championships and third best in program history. 

All-American Notes
  • Davis has been named an All-American in both of his seasons so far, and earned First-Team All-American honors this season for his Championship. He is the only SCSU athlete to be named an All-American twice in the javelin.
  • Kelly has earned First-Team All-American Shot Put honors in back-to-back seasons to cap off his collegiate career. Kelly, Cameron (2014, 2015), and Jeff Cretella (2004, 2005) are the only SCSU athletes to earn two Shot Put All-American honors.  
  • Green has earned earned All-American honors in in the 4x400-meter relay in three consecutive seasons, while Manning has earned it in back-to-back seasons. 
  • Green is the first SCSU athlete to be named an All-American in three consecutive seasons in a single event since Michael Lee from 2014-2016 in the triple jump. 
  • Manning also earned Second-Team All-American honors in the 400-meter hurdles, the first 400-meter hurdle SCSU All-American since Sharpe in 2014. 
  • The team of Phillips, Henry, N'Dabian, and Green became the second SCSU 4x100-meter relay team to earn All-American honors, with the other coming in 1985 by Dan Seals, Trevor Howard, Ken Ricks, Lincoln Roach. 
  • Green also earned Second-Team All-American honors in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes to give him nine total (five outdoor, four indoor). Selasi Lumax currently holds the SCSU program record for most All-American honors between indoor and outdoor season with 10. 
  • Henry received Second-Team All-American honors in the 400-meter run, the second SCSU athlete all-time to do so and the first since Donnovan Little in 1988. 
  • Henry has now been named an All-American four times; 2020 indoor 4x400-meter relay, 2022 outdoor 400-meter run, 4x100-meter relay, and outdoor 4x400-meter relay.
  • N'Dabian has been named an All-American twice; 2021 4x400 outdoor meter relay and 2022 outdoor 4x100-meter relay.
