SCSU Baseball Ties Adelphi, 3-3, After 12 Innings

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In a battle of the top-two teams in the Northeast 10 Southwest Division, Southern Connecticut's matchup against Adelphi seemed like it didn't want to end. The Owls and Panthers played to a 3-3 tie in a game that was called due to darkness after the 12th inning. Southern goes to 29-10-1 overall and 13-6-1 in the NE10 while Adelphi is now 25-10-1 and 14-5-1 in conference play.

While the Owls entered the game with the goal of overtaking the top spot in the Southwest Division, they did manage to take the four-game series, 2-1-1. Nick Guarino set the town for the Owls in the no-decision on the mound after giving up just one run on five hits across seven stellar innings.

In doing so, he remained undefeated for the year through 13 starts with a record of 8-0 while lowering his ERA to 3.38. Guarino has logged a team-high 80 innings on the mound, totaling 60 strikeouts against just 12 walks. In conference play, Guarino is 2-0 in seven starts with a 2.20 ERA while leading the team with 34 K's in 45 innings. He's taken a no decision in his last three starts, despite logging 22 innings and allowing just five runs for a 2.04 ERA with 15 strikeouts.

Tommy Hughes spun 3 2/3 scoreless inning while allowing one hit and walking one batter while allowing just three baserunners while shutting down the Adelphi offense.

At the plate, Mike DeMartino jacked his fifth home run of the season to give the Owls an early lead in the second inning. In the third, Tony Zambito was hit by a pitch before swiping second base and then scoring on a single by Billy Sullivan. Sullivan then scored on a single by Andrew Eng to cap the Owls' scoring.

Zambito and Sullivan led the Owls with two hits apiece, while Zambito also reached base twice after being hit by a pitch. He had an incredible four stolen bases in the game to push his season total to 36, which is good for the second-most in a single season in program history. He passed Marc Potocksky who stole 34 bases twice, in 2001 and 2002, and now sits three stolen bases from tying the single-season record of 39 by Mike Diaz in 2008.

Southern is back in action with a critical four-game series against New Haven on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, both set for a 12 p.m. start at The Ballpark at SCSU.
