SCSU Baseball Tops New Haven, 15-12

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated New Haven, 15-12, in a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division meeting between the Elm City rivals at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls improve to 30-10-1 overall and 14-6-1 in the NE10 while New Haven drops to 22-19 and 7-14 in conference.

The Owls and the Chargers were scheduled to play two games on Friday, May 7, but with rain starting in New Haven, they opted to postpone the seven-inning game. Additionally, with constant rain in the forecast through Saturday, May 7, the two teams will also postpone their two scheduled games for that day, and ultimately lose a game on their schedule, and play two, seven-inning games on Sunday, May 8 at 12 Noon.

The Owls are 30-game winners for the first time since the 2012 season. It's also the 10th time that the Owls have won 30 games in a season, all-time.

The Owls' offense exploded for 15 runs on 15 hits against the Chargers, as Mike DeMartino, Jack Drewry and Chad Fedeli all had three hits each, while DeMartino and Dave Christoforo, who was 2-for-3, both drove in two runs. Andrew Eng was 2-for-4 with four RBI in the game.

Senior Jared Smith, making his third appearance of the season, pinch-hit for Christoforo in the seventh inning and played the hero as he delivered a RBI double that ignited the Owls for seven runs and the lead late in the game.
Both teams played back-and-forth early on as the Owls countered a New Haven two-run second inning with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Owls strung together four hits in the inning and also capitalized on an error and saw Christoforo, Bedryczuk and Eng (2) all drive in runs before Billy Sullivan also stole home.

UNH came back and tied the game in the top of the third before Christoforo drove in another run in the bottom half of the inning to give the Owls the lead. The Chargers then scored twice in the fourth inning and held their lead until the sixth. Trailing, 8-7, Zach Bedryczuk and Tony Zambito both walked to start the inning. Billy Sullivan then dropped down the bunt to move the runners over, but an error allowed Bedryczuk to score and tie the game. Eng then hit a high fly ball to right to score Zambito and give the Owls a 9-8 lead.

In the seventh, UNH's Andrew Bianco homered on the first pitch he saw to tie the game again. In the bottom of the inning, Jack Drewry lined a single to left-center before Fedeli moved him over with a base hit. Head coach Tim Shea then pinch hit for Christoforo, who was 2-for-3 with a RBI in each at-bat, for the seldom used Jared Smith. Smith delivered when he jumped on a 2-and-2 pitch and lined a shot to right field to score Drewry and give the Owls a 10-9 lead. A balk and an error accounted for two more runs before Zambito reached on a dropped pop-up to shallow center field that allowed Smith to score to give the Owls a 12-9 lead. Eng followed with a sacrifice fly before DeMartino turned on the first pitch that he saw to drove in Connor Goggin and Eng and give the Owls a 15-9 lead.

Meanwhile on the mound, Spencer Fox was working through the UNH order, navigating through three innings without giving up a run. In the ninth, the Owls went with closer Tommy Hughes who uncharacteristically walked three batters and allowed three runs to score. With the Owls holding a 15-12 lead, Peter Phillips came on to close out the game with the bases load. Fox improved to 1-1 on the year while Phillips converted his third save opportunity.
