SCSU Men's Soccer Opens Season With 2-0 Win At Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated Dominican, 2-0, in the Owls' 2022 season opener in Orangeburg, N.Y. With the win, Southern opens the year at 1-0 while Dominican debuts at 0-1.

Freshman Zico Groenveld (Aalsmeer, Netherlands) scored the Owls' first goal of the season, as well as his first career goal, just under 13 minutes into regulation. The Owls defense stomped out a Chargers' rush before Alessio Caradolfo (Sicily, Italy) played the ball long to Yannick Hilpert (Holland, Netherlands) in the Owls attack midfield. Hilpert carried the ball to the top of the box, dribbled it around a defender and fed Groenveld in front of the Dominican goal for the first tally of the game.

Southern keeper Devan Juan (Meriden, Conn.) saw only two shots-on-goal for the afternoon and successfully steered both away for the clean sheet. Juan made a save in the first half, and one in the second.

11 minutes into the second half, the Owls capitalized off an offsides call on Dominican, quickly moving the ball into the attack zone. Sophomore Joshi Munoz (New Haven, Conn.) took control of the ball in the midfield, made a move around a defender and then blasted a shot on goal from 30-yards that found the top left corner to put the Owls on top, 2-0.

Southern returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 28 when it travels to University of Bridgeport for a 5 p.m. tilt against the Purple Knights.
