SCSU Men's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Draw At Bridgeport

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's soccer drew a 1-1 tie at Bridgeport to remain undefeated at 1-0-1 through its first weekend of games. Bridgeport also goes to 1-0-1 on the season.

Zico Groenveld (Aalsmeer, Netherlands) scored his second goal in as many games to start his Southern career after also scoring in the Owls' 2-0 win at Dominican on Thursday. Groenveld scored off a penalty kick to tie the game early in the second half.

Bridgeport's Lucas Sousa put the home team on the board first, scoring off a free kick from the top of the box in the 29th minute of play. Up to that point, Southern had three scoring opportunities that it couldn't convert on before the Purple Knights jumped out to a one-goal lead on its first shot-on-goal.

Just under five minutes into the second half, Joshi Munoz (New Haven, Conn.) sent a free kick into the box. Giuseppe Mongelluzzo (Waterbury, Conn.) made an attempt to play the ball but was taken down from behind in the box, giving the Owls the penalty shot. Groenveld drilled the shot to the bottom-left corner to tie the game.

Owls keeper Devan Juan (Meriden, Conn.) saw only three shots on goal for the day, two of which came in the closing minutes which he steered away to preserve the Owls' tie. Southern held the advantage in shots-on-goal, 5-3, for regulation.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3 for their home opener at Jess Dow Field when they host Mercy at 2 p.m.
