SCSU Men's Soccer Rolls To 3-1 Win Against Mercy In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut men's soccer scored early and never trailed in a 3-1 win against Mercy in the Owls home opener at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls remain undefeated at 2-0-1 while Mercy drops to 2-1-1 on the year.

Yannick Hilpert (Den Haag, Netherlands) scored twice in the Owls' win while Zachary Tuccitto (Clinton, Conn.) also scored for the Owls. Leroy Best (Bielefeld, Germany) and Arnold Signell (Lidingo, Sweden) had assists in the game while Owls keeper Devin Juan (Meriden, Conn.) had two saves in the Owls' win.

The Owls converted on their first attempt of the game, just under three minutes into regulation. Umberto Catale took control of the ball in the midfield and handed it off to Leroy Best. Best took off on a run down the center of the field, maneuvering through traffic before finding Yannick Hilpert on the left wing. Hilpert beat his defender and then chipped a shot over the outstretched hand of Mercy's keeper to put the Owls on top, 1-0.

In the 55th minute, Mercy threated with a throw-in deep in their attack zone. Arnold Signell took control of the ball at the top of the box and then sent a beautiful pass up the middle of the field. The ball found Zachary Tuccitto's boot, who dribbled in behind the Mavericks' defense and fired a shot to the top-right corner to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

Mercy's Nicolas Cerda cut the Owls' lead in half with just under 20 minutes to play when he re-directed a cross from Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen to cut Southern's lead to a goal, 2-1. In the 86th minute, Hilpert pushed the Owls' lead back up to two goals with his second marker of the game. Fighting for possession in the attack zone, Zico Groenveld won a battle and tipped it over to Hilpert. Hilpert dribbled through several defenders before unleashing a shot on Mercy's keeper from 20 yards that glanced off his glove and bounced into the net to give Southern the 3-1 lead.

The Owls are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they host College of Staten Island at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
