NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut field hockey team defeated American International College, 2-0, in its home opener at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast 10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the NE10.

Behind goals from
Abbey Kellerman (Fairfield, Conn.) and
Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti (Adrogue, Buenos Aires, Argentina), the Owls were able shut out the Yellow Jackets and defeat them for the second time in two weeks.
Kaitlyn Parent (Glastonbury, Conn.) put on another solid performance in goal as she made six stops for the first collegiate shutout of her career.Â

How It Happened
- Southern struck midway into the first quarter off a corner. Kaitlyn Bourque (Enfield, Conn.) slotted it over to Kayla Siemer (West Milford, N.J.), who took a shot on cage. The ball squeaked through the pads of AIC's keeper Taylor Wildes, and fell to the right side for Kellerman to knock home.
- AIC's intensity heightened in the middle quarters with eight shots to Southern's four shots.
- Fourth quarter action saw the Owls put their feet on the gas with five shots on goal. With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Siemer put a shot on goal on a corner that was redirected by Rodriguez Ricchiuti and got past Wildes.Â
- The Yellow Jackets were unable to solve Parent, whose six saves secured the home opening victory.
