NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Saint Michael's, 85-70, for its ninth consecutive win at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improve to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the Northeast 10 while the Purple Knights drop to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored a game-high 22 points, highlighted by four three-pointers, as well as six assists in the Owls' win. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) finished with 19 points after knocking down 4-of-5 from long range while also dishing out nine assists and totaling five rebounds and five steals. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) came off the bench to total 14 points and seven rebounds while Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds.

As a team, the Owls shot 50% (33-66) from the floor and 52.6% (10-19) from three-point range, including a 6-for-9 showing from behind the arc in the second half. The Owls also dominated the board, 43-29, and rallied behind 21 points off of Purple Knights' turnovers.

Coleman did most of his damage in the first half as he scorched the Purple Knights for 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play to lead the Owls to a 43-22 halftime lead. Penn followed with eight in the first half while Silvera and Stewart both totaled six. After Saint Michael's Romar Reid hit the backend of a pair of free throws to pull the Purple Knights within three points with just under 15 minutes to play, the Owls used a 9-3 run to take a double-digit lead, 20-10, with 10:51 to go. After going bac and forth, the Owls then pushed its lead to 19 with a 12-4 run, 37-18, and outscored the Purple Knights, 20-9, over the last eight minutes of the half.

The second half saw Southern take a 60-30 lead in the first five minutes of the game after outscoring the Purple Knights, 17-8, in the span. That seemed to awaken the Purple Knights, who outscored Southern, 40-25, over the final 10 minutes of the half, keyed by 12 points from Alan Brzezinski and 10 from Darrel Yepdo.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 with a crosstown matchup against University of New Haven at 3 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.
