SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To New Haven, 58-51

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to New Haven, 58-51, in a Northeast 10 matchup in West Haven, Con. With the loss, Southern drops to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play while New Haven improves to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in NE10 action.

Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) led the Owls with 17 points, including 10 in the first half, while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) totaled 12 rebounds, with six points, including six offensive rebounds. Zach Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) had eight points and nine rebounds. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) came off the bench to total seven points and five rebounds.

New Haven opened the game with a 15-4 run over the game's first 10 minutes and held a 20-6 edge with eight minutes to play. Southern worked its way back into the game, outscoring the Chargers, 16-12, over the last 6:29 of the half. Coleman led the Owls in the run, scoring 10 points down the stretch, including three free throws with 2.9 seconds left that pulled the Owls to within 10, 32-22, heading into the break.

Southern made it a game in the second half as they opened with a 10-3 4un to cut New Haven's lead to 35-32. After New Haven pushed its lead back to 10 points, 46-36, with eight minutes to play the Owls used a late 9-2 run to pull within three points, 48-45, with 4:30 to play. It would be the closest the Owls got down the stretch as New Haven held off the Owls' offense.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 when it hosts Le Moyne in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House at 7:30 p.m
