SCSU Men's Indoor Track & Field Wins 8 Events At I95 Showdown

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's indoor track & field won eight events against New Haven and Bridgeport at the I95 Showdown at James Moore Field House. Freshman Kenneth Okoye won two events, capturing the High Jump and Triple Jump while Nathaniel Llano had a NCAA provisional mark in the Pole Vault.

Okoye's High Jump win came down to a jump off with teammate Jason Sawicki. Okoye's winning jump was 6'3 ½" inches while Sawicki posted a distance of 6' 2 ¾". In the Triple Jump, Okoye won by two inches with a distance of 41'8", defeating New Haven's Akin Akinwunmi's jump of 41"6".

Nathaniel Llano won the Pole Vault with a height of 15'11" while Hayden Rovelli was second at 13'11 ¼". In the Shot Put, Bernardo Mbaya took first place with a distance of 51'5 ¾" while Natanael Barbosa Torres was second at 50'7 ¼". Gary Robinson, Jr. recorded a throw of 46'8 ¼" for fourth place while Adelino Daveiga was fifth at 44'4 ¼".

Robinson, Jr. won the Weight Throw with a distance of 52'8 ¼" while Daveiga was second at 51'5 ½".

Jared Russo edged teammate Dylan Torok head-to-head in the 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 7.93 while Torok finished in 8.57. Divine Edwards led three Owls in the top three spots in the 300 Meter Dash with a time of 36.93, followed by Noah Conrod in second at 37.18 and Ty Phelan in third at 37.77.

The Owls also took the top three spots in the 600 Meter Run, led by Shane Smith in first place at 1:28.32, edging Besufekad Opstrup in second place at 1:28.44. Nolan Scott was third at 1:29.42.

Southern returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 22 when they host the William Sutherland Invitational at James Moore Field House.
