SCSU Men's Basketball Defeats Le Moyne, 73-71

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Le Moyne, 73-71, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in NE10 play while Le Moyne dropped to 9-10 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

Sean James (East Hartford, Conn.) had 29 points to match his season-high, while shooting 6-of-11 from three-point range and 10-of-16 from the floor. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) once-again filled up the box score as he totaled 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had a game-high 11 rebounds with three points, three assists and three blocks. Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) finished with 12 points.

The game opened with both teams going back-and-forth until it sat at 15-15 with 13:31 to play in the first half. Southern then used a 13-2 run while outscoring Le Moyne, 18-7, for a nine-minute stretch in the middle of th3e first half to take its biggest lead of the half, 31-22, with 4:40 to play. Le Moyne closed out the half with a 9-3 run of its own to cut into Southern's lead as the Owls headed to halftime with a three-point lead, 34-31.

Sean James led the Owls in the first half with a game-high 13 points on the strength of 3-of-5 shooting from long range. Silvera also contributed seven points, four rebounds and four assists in the first half.

In the second half, both teams traded baskets again before Le Moyne used a 10-2 run to take a 48-46 lead with 13:52 to play. After Southern tied the game at 52-52, Le Moyne used another big run to take a 62-54 lead with seven minutes to play. Southern sharpshooter James then knocked down three-straight three-pointers as the Owls outscored the Dolphins, 16-6, to take a 70-66 lead with a minute to play before Kazell Stewart converted on a pair of free throws to push Southern's lead to six points, 72-66.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
